ES. ™ Sh r--: Be ., A Final building report shows steep decline in 1990 The value of building per- mits issued in Scugog Township last year dropped by nearly $14 million over 1989. The report, issued recently by the Township, shows 326 permits worth $19.8 million last year. The previous year, 1989, by comparison was a solid year for construction in Scugog Town- ship with 488 permits issued, worth $33.4 million. The decline in Scugog is much the same as other areasin Durham Region, which are feel- ing similar affects of the reces- sion. The most significant de- cline was in the number and to- tal value of permits for con- struction of new homes. In 1989, there were 149 built at a value of just over $22.5 million. Last year, the fig- ure was 71, with a value of just MoJacks move up fo second after three straight wins Three straight wins last week put the Port Perry Mo- Jacks firmly in second place in the Central Junior C Hockey League. ~ But the playoff picture right now is anything but set- tled. Team officials say they will have to wait until the regular schedule concludes this Satur- day night before they know who the ModJacks will face in the opening round, a best of seven affair. And just when the playoffs get underway is not known, ei- ther. For a report on the games last week and the standings, see sports pages in this edition of the Port Perry Star. over $11.6 million. The value of industrial and farm permits also dropped dra- matically from $2.6 million in 1989, to $828,000in 1990. While construction of new houses is on the decline, the re- port shows that additions and alterations are fairly solid. There were 115 permits worth $2.8 million, compared with 1563 at $3.6 million in 1989. The recession appears to have hit the swimming poool in- dustry. In 1989, there 40 permits issued for poois. Last year, there were 24. Despite the down-turn in several important sectors of the building industry, there were some bright spots for Scugog last year. The value of permits for commercial building increased from $1.2 million to $1.8 mil- lion, and the value of permits for commercial additions and alteration more than doubled, from $339,000 to $788,000. 201 Queen St., Port Perry 985-3221 (located in Luke's Country Store) COMPARE THE RATE! ; ) | 165 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-8435 LACE, NOTIONS, ROLLER BLINDS, VERTICAL BLINDS. However, there are some predictions that suggest the economy may start to improve 30 Yy 1 . ' ' ANE UE 2 BERS SA0 BF i! PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 29, 1991 -- 3 this summer or early fall. While the recession cer- tainly takes some of the blame for the downturn in construc- tion of new homes in Scugog Township, another reason is the lack of fully serviced (sewer and water) land for new devel- opment.
