Curling championship to port to the up-coming provincial elementary school championships to be held in February in Port Perry. He's the current Ontario, Canada and world champion. Andrea Durham, Karen Opper, Erin Smith, Lindsay Patton, Amy Sinclair. e Provincial Curling Championship for Elementary Schools will be held in Port Perry and Uxbridge February 22-24. And the event got a big boost last week from Canada's premier curler Ed Werenich. Werenich, the reigning On- tario, Canadian and World Champion, presented local or- ganizers with $500 in a ceremo- ny at R.H. Cornish School last Thursday. That money was left over from last year's School champi- onship eventin Newmarket. Reg Philip, who is working to stage the championship here this year, said the donation was greatly appreciated, as was the presence of Werenich. He's just back from a couple of weeks curling in Switzerland, and he's getting ready for the defense of his titles this spring. After turning over the cheque for $500, local junior curlers presented him with e bright red sweat shirt that com- memorates the up-coming championship. Werenich didn't come alone be held here to Port Perry last Thursday. With him was 12-year old son Ryan, who appears to be taking after his famous curling father. Though only 12, Ryan has been curling for five years. And two years ago, he won the Ontario Elementary School championship in Parry Sound. Last year, he skipped his rink to the silver medals in Newmar- ket. And yes, Ryan will be icing a rink for the championships in Port Perry later next month. "He (Ryan) has been watch- ing my videos," quipped his fa- ther. Mr. Philip said plans to host the third annual Elemen- tary School championships are progressing. He expects there will be 32 teams taking part, including entries from Cornish and Caw- ker Schools here. Action will take place at both the Port Perry and Ux- bridge Clubs. And the publicis more than welcome to take in the games at both rinks to see some of the best young curlers in Ontario. Port Atom A's win the consolation title The Malmont Atoms A's travelled to Nobleton for tourna- ment action and came home as Consolation Champions. Saturday morning they played a Port Elgin squad. Port took the lead 40 seconds into the game on a play set up by Kevin C. and Daryl M. and executed by Shane N. Shane carried the puck up the side and blistered home a wrist shot. Two minutes later, Port Elgin tied it up. Danny R. after checking hard for the puck, found Mike H. open. Mike is still wondering how the puck went through the crowd out in front and found the mesh to put Port Perry ahead again. Daryl M. made some fancy moves behind the net and then put it out in front to Kevin C. who fired it home. Port Elgin closed the gap to 1. Casey V. and Dillan W. were both taking shots but Dillan's put the good guys ahead 4-2. Port Elgin notched one more to end the first period 4-3. Halfway through the third period Port Elgin tied it up. with 1:48 left in the game, Port Elgin went ahead and with 29 sec's left, popped the insurance marker into the open net. This game put Port on the consolation side and with their hard work and determination - winners! Sunday morning, this Port team hit the road at 5:00 a.m.. The first period was end to end. The crowds for both Port Perry and Gravenhurst cheered their teams on. Port hit the scoreboard early in the second period. Kent Johnston took a blinding shot from the point. Near the end of the second period, on a powerplay, Adam J. again, and Justin K. set up Shane again, who was determined to keep Port ahead. Great goal Shane! Both teams were pumped up after the flood, starting the third period, vuL Nobleton tied it up in 3 minutes. breakaways, and lots of chances, but agains the goalies were hang- ing tough. Paul S. between the © pipes in this match and met the challenges with some great saves. Everyone was getting ready for overtime when Shane Norton and Casey Van Schagen set up Mike Morden who sent Port home with trophies! Congratulations to a great team player - Shane Norton who was honored with a well deserved MVP in the final game. From all the boys on the team - thanks to Mr. Weber for the N.H.L. player pucks. Floor hockey They were back in action once again for a fast-paced game on January 21. It was a Heron vic- tory over the Wildcats with a 6-2 score. The first period goal opener was Owen St. John of the Herons. This was shortly answered by a Wildcat goal from Brennan Malcolm to tie up the score. In the second period, Owen St. John once again scored and Kevin Duncan supplied a single as well for the Herons. Third period action for the Herons left the Wildcats behind. Herons singles were scored by Kevin Duncan and the 'dynamic duo' brothers, Brad and Ryan Fraser. Kevin Pyke with his quick dodging moves, netted a single for the Wildcats. Both teams had .«
