ARE BS IY 3 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 22, 1991 Local artist's sculpture A bronze statue by a Port Perry sculptor will soon be on permanent display at the Na- tional War Museum in Ottawa. The statue of a World War 1 cavalry officer on horseback, is the work of Tyler Briley, and he told the Star last week he's thrilled that his work was cho- sen by the War Museum. t's easy to see why. The 18- inch high statue is visually stunning. Cast in bronze, it depicts the officer and horse in minute detail, right down to the tether pole, sabre, ration kit, ammuni- tion pack and Lee Enfield rifle. The horse is rearing slight- ly on its hind legs, its head flung to one side (perhaps as a result of a wound) £nd the rider is try- ing to get it under control. Mr. Briley, a full time fire- fighter in Scarborough, worked on the piece "on and off for about eight months." He took his inspiration for the statue from an old post-card photo of his grandad William Briley, who was an officer in the British cavalry, and came through the entire Great War without a scratch. The War Museum is due to take possession of the statue on display at war museum some time after April 1. It will be part of a display this summer about WW 1 cavalry and then go on permanent display. The statue is now sitting in the front hall of Mr. Briley's Port Perry home, and he con- cedes he has a strong emotional attachment to it. ne Cos Ss Re ER RE EEE Mm ape te Se Or i es "I'm going to greatly miss it when it goes out of here in April," he told the Star. But, he is more than | pleased the War Muse de- cided to purchase the piece. The Museum is paying more for this piece than it has for art by any living Canadian. Mr. Briley said he didn't set out to create this statue for the Museum. A friend of his who has con- tacts with museum staff saw the piece put him in touch with the museum's art acquisitions office. He believes the committee was unanimous in its decision to acquire this piece. To create the statue he first : fashioned it in wax, which was i then dipped in a ceramic slurry 8 mix.
