'Atom A's reach semi-final in Peter The Malmont Atom A's started their week with playoff action against Cobourg. In a best 3 out of 5 series, they have found themselves in a discouraging situation. Port needs towin 3 in a row to take the series. On Tues. the 15th, they travell- The playoffs began for the Pineridge Atom #2 team last Thursday against Stouffville at the Scugog Arena. This game proved to be an ex- citing start to the round robin series with Stouffville and Lind- say. The top two teams then play a best of five to determine the group winner. The game started off slow with Stouffville playing a strong forechecking game which paid off with a goal in the first to take the lead. Their hard work continued as they built up a 3-0 lead by the middle of the second. Unfortunately the team from Port was up against a very hot goaltender. His fine saves in- cluding a spectacular glove save on Blayne Kinnunen paved the way to a 3-1 Stouffville win. Scott Sanderson scored for Port on a deflection from a shot from Colin Laird. On the weekend the team travelled to Beaverton for a two day tournament. On Saturday our only game was against a team from Westhill. This game was pure excitement from start to finish and was not for the faint of heart to watch. The goaltending tandem of Heather Tredway and Jon Chambers played excellent as they continually stopped the Westhill team. End to end action continued for three periods but no team could score. The game went into over- time with each team playing with . only three skaters and it wasn't until a minute left that Justin Halligan scored the winner for Port. A big assist to Blayne Kin- nunen who was also the winner of the Best Hustle Award for the game. On Sunday, their next game was up against Richmond Hill. If anyone was still asleep, they were soon woken up as the Pineridge team played another excellent game. Once again they played a fast skating, strong forechecking game as they wilted down the big team from Richmond Hill. Justin Halligan started things off in the second as he scored unassisted. In the second the action con- tinued at a fast pace and Scott Jeffrey on a rush outskated the Richmond Hill defence and slid the puck into the far corner giv- ing Pineridge a 2-0 lead. They managed to get one back late in the third but Pineridge came right back as Justin Halligan, with a awesome wrist shot made the final score 3-1. Assisting on the goal was Blayne Kinnunen and Adam Hobbs, Best Hustle Award in this game went to a very deser- ving Scott Harper. This win put Port into the final of the cham- pionship round against Newmarket. Another nailbiter from start to finish. This game was fast paced, exciting hockey, for two periods these two teams went end to end as once again the goaltenders were hot. Unfortunately for Port penalties would be their downfall as Newmarket scored two on the power play in the third, Port got one back late in the third from Lyons assisted by Scott Jeffrey, ewmarkef iced the victory near the end for a final CAE I oO NCU I A J VIE tY Cg ed to Cobourg. With 1 minute left in the 1st period, Port took the lead. Casey V. carried the puck around the defense and passed perfectly to Justin K. who pick- ed the short side of the netminder. Dillan W. scooped up the rebound and sent it home. Cobourg tied it up % wav thru the 2nd bhnt only score of 3-1. Jamie Strickert earn- ed the Best Hustle Award and played great pinch hitting on dpisnse for Wyatt Park who was sick. This was a good showing from for a minute when Justin K. pass- ed to Kent J. who found Daryl Mc. on the corner. Daryl quickly pop- ped it home to give Port the lead again. Shots on net at the end of the 2nd were: Cobourg 10, Port 8. The third period belonged to Cobourg as they outshot Port 15-3 Pineridge Atom 2 update the team as they played excellent hockey all weekend. Hopefully this strong play will continue for the playoffs and they will prevail and benefit from the efforts. Keep up the good work. PY EE PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday. January 22, 1991 -- 21 and scored 3 unanswered goals. Cobourg travelled to Port on Wed. the 15th and left with a 4-0 victory. There's no doubt in our minds that Port can come back and leave Cobourg behind wondering what happened. They beat this same team 4-1 in the final game of the Bowmanville Tournament only 2 weeks ago. Come on guys, we're all cheering you on!! You can do it. Thursday night found these guys in Peterborough in the 1st game of a 4 day tournament. They met the minor AAA Peterborough team and came home with a hard fought 2-2 tie. Port's defensive team of Mike H., Kent J. and Seth G. have been outstanding at checking the op- position and clearing that rubber disc. Paul S. has been making some awesome saves between the pipes as he's been "hot." The combination of Shane N. Daryl Mec. and Kevin C. was effective in this match. Daryl sent one home in the 1st period to tie it. Assist to Kevin. Kevin sent one home in the 3rd to tie it up again with an assist to Daryl. They returned to Peterborough Sat. morning and after 3 periods clenched a 3-2 victory over Leamington. On a power play, Casey found Shane who did some fancy shuf- fling around the defense and fired a great shot. Daryl wasted no time in picking up the rebound and putting it past the netminder. At the end of the 2nd Leamington had found the slot twice. Port recovered 2 way thru the third when Mike M. set the puck on the top shelf to tie it up. Great play set up by hard working team- mates Adam J. and Danny R. With 11 seconds left in the game Shane N. found Kevin C. open who carried it the length of the ice. Daryl Mc. had the corner picked twice, but the third time left everyone standing and cheering. Great goal Daryl! In the afternoon they matched up against a squad from Trenton. The fans were on the edge of their OHA JR. 'C' HOCKEY SCUGOG ARENA - PORT PERRY 8:30 PM - THURSDAY, JANUARY 24th, 1991 borough seats throughout this one too. Trenton hit the board first with the only goal in the opening period. Mike H. made a 'heads up" pass to Adam J. who travelled down the ice. He picked the short side and blistered home a wrist shot that the goalie didn't even see. Ending the 2nd period was a solo performance by Daryl Mc. who took the face-off, while play- ing short handed, and kept on checking until he slid it through the 5 hole to give Port a 2-1 lead. The 3rd period was end to end until Casey, taking the puck up the side, found Justin. Justin & Dillan were out in front and with 33 seconds left to go Dillan put the red light on. Way to work together guys. This gave Port the go ahead to the semi finals Sunday morning against Ernestown. Ernestown hit the board twice before Adam J. sent another blinding wrist shot into the mesh. Assists to both Mike H. and Casey V. Unfor- tunately Ernestown hit the marker twice again before Port's Casey V. drove it in. Mike H. making another great pass out to the forwards. It was a well played tourney. Luke Carnaghan played two strong games between the pipes as did Paul S. These guys are together again next weekend for more tourna- ment play in Nobleton. Good luck guys.
