Nearly 50 submissions in Christmas story contest In this, our special Christ- mas edition, you will find the five winning entries in the Star's Christmas story contest. From the nearly 50 entries that were submitted by our readers, we had a most difficult task selecting one overall win- ner and four honourable men- tions. In our view, all the entries had winning qualities. But the five selected by our Judges take a look at a "memor- able Christmas" from different points of view. The judges were impressed by the message, the style and the quality of writing. Our overall winner, titled "A Gift to Last" was submitted by Richard Borek of Port Perry. It is a heart-tugging ac- count of how a family faces Christmas, knowing that it will be the last Christmas for the mother, who has cancer. The quality of writing is su- perb. The four honourable men- tions, re-printed in this edition, are all marvellous Christmas stories. "Christmas Carol," by Eu- nice Streeter of Janetville takes us back to 1940 and Christmas seen through the eyes of a ten- year old, when times were tough in the city of Toronto. Henri Smits of Port Perry also takes us back in time to 1944 in occupied Holland as he and his father risk capture by the Germans to spend Christ- mas Eve with Henri's mother. And Betty Deeth of Port Perry recalls a country Christ- mas in 1937 when she was a small girl, and the wonderful "memories of that time. Cheryl Hudgins of Port Perry "Count Your Blessings," looks at Christmas as a time for reflection on the true meaning of Peace on Earth. We are sure our readers will enjoy these stories as much as we did in reading and judg- ing them. Again, our sincere thanks to all who submitted stories. Man dies in Lake Scugog From Page 1 According to the fire depart- ment, the victim was in the wa- ter for about 20 minutes before being rescued. Once the call was received it took the firefighters just ten minutes to arrive at the scene, and another ten minutes to bring him to shore. The ice was cracking as the fireman ran out, and the spokesperson stated the ice was only about two inches thick where the men had gone through. The fire department also had a call on Friday evening when a four-wheeler went through the ice just off Williams Point. The ' operator of that vehicle was un- hurt. ~The fire department is warn- ing people that the ice is not yet sae.
