After a long drive the team prepared for a 5:30 game against the host team Nepean. The Port Perry girls did not play their usual precision game and lost 7-4. Shona Moase and Cara Vande. Slagt each scored 2 goals with assists going to Shona 2, Dana, Cindy, Cara, Laura, and Alicia each with an assist. However, with a show of determination, the team began to work together and the game end- ed with a 9-3 win. Shona scored 3 times; Cara and Dana Hooker twice, and Jannine Hammond once. This game was an exciting exhibition of ringette skills with Port winning 4-2. The goals were scored by Dana with 2, and Jannine and Shona with 1 each. Assisting were Jan- nine, Cindy and Laura. Thanks again to Katie who was almost unbeatable and to Bonnie Jo Nor- ton who single handedly killed a penalty with Port's white and red stick both in the box. Port vs Cumberland And here we go again -- Almost 15 hours non-stop after the wake up call. This was a "must-win" game for Port and the girls all showed great determination and desire. However, their tired bodies struggled on to a 4-3 loss to the Cumberland team which end- ed up the day as the round robin winner. Scoring for Port were Cara, Laura and Shona with assists from Cindy, Brooke and Jana. Even though the girls did not advance to the final Sunday game they certainly played com- petitively against some excellent teams and made the coaches and parents proud. Special thanks to Dot Hooker for the crafts she brought for the girls to do between games and to all those parents who guided Coach Senyk to the games through the weekend. A coach cannot coach if he is lost! The next game is at 5 p.m. next Sunday at Harmon Park. Start of something good To begin a busy weekend the Port Perry Legionnaires hosted Pickering in an exhibition game on Friday November 30. Port Perry opened the scoring. The goal was scored by LeFort. Assisting on the goal was Bourgeois and Tredway. Port kept the goals rolling, scoring another one. It was Hobbs this time, popping a rebound home. The playmakers were Bourgeois and LeFort. Port's next goal came just one minute later. McCready let go a bullet from the blueline beating the Pickering netminder. Zaparanuik picked up the assist on the goal. Still in the first stanza the Legionnaires picked up yet another goal with King blowing by the defence and beating the goalie. But Port didn't stop there. Tredway blew to the outside end, made a beautiful effort to cut to the net and score. The goal was unassisted. At the end of the first period it was Port Perry 5 and Pickering 0. In the second, Port managed only two more goals. The first goal was scored by Geer who picked up a loose puck & beat the man between the pipes. Tredway picked up the assist. The second goal was socred by LeFort who tipped in a Hobbs shot. The other assist was made by Bourgeois! In the third period, Port found twine only once more as King scored with a hard shot. Picking up an assist was the hard work- ing Laird. Port Perry goalie Brandon Hammond played ex- ceptionally well between the pipes letting only 2 goals in. Good game Brandon. The final score was Port Perry 8 and Pickering 2. This weekend Port Perry is off to Stouffville for a tournament hoping to take the championship. Their first game is against Whitby at 11:15 a.m. Saturday morning. CHAMPIONS Stouffville 'Pizza Pizza" Pee Wee Tournament Port's first game of the tour- nament was against Whitby. Port put the first light up on the board as lan Shirgley rifled one up over the goalies shoulders. Whitby scored on a breakaway tying the game at 1. In the dying second of the first period, LeFort popped home a rebound of a McCready blast! The other playmaker was King. Onto the second frame where it was all Port. Tredway beat the netminder with a nice effort to get to the net and score. Picking up an assist was Bourgeois. Still in the second, Laird got a beauty goal. Making the play was McCready and LeFort. In the third frame, Port got their final goal. It was Morris this time, letting a bullet go from the point. The assist was made by Hobbs. The final score was Port Perry 5 and Whitby 1. Port was very lucky to obtain netminder Paul Shrigley who subbed for the ab- sent Scot Prechitko. The M.V.P. of the game award went to Ken- ton LeFort, for his hard work on the ice. Great game Port, and good luck against Markham. Game 2 pitted Port against Markham to decide who would play in the championship match- up. It was Port's turn to start the scoring, and did so as Tredway combined with LeFort to put the rubber in the net. Geer got the honors for Port's 2nd of the game, ° with well earned assist going to fellow linesmen Lairu « Shrigley. Markham snuck one past our netminder with 12 seconds left to end the period, Port up 2-1. The second period saw Port jump ahead on a scramble in front of the net, goal by Chambers assisted by Geer and Morris, with Port leading 3-2 into the third period. The competition began to get mean, injuring Laird, LeFort and Shrigley all of whom never gave up and continued to play the re- mainder of the game injured. It wasn't until 1:25 left in the 3rd that Morris skated in and rocket- ted home the clinching goal. Mor- ris picked up the M.V.P. for this game for his outstanding effort in Port's 4-2 victory. Championship Game Well the whole tournament come down to this final game which had the powerful Legion- naires facing off against a much larger team from East York. East York started off the scor- ing during the 1st shift. The East York team continued to hold the lead until early in the 2nd period when the old cliche "'the bigger they are the harder they fall," started to come true. Chambers found the combina- tion to beat the oppositions strong netminder, assisted by Bourgeois. The excitement mounted as neither team could seem to put the puck in the net. Scot Pret- chitko was unbeatable as he repeatedly frustrated the East York Bull Dogs. Fantastic game Scot. With only 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd period, LeFort netted Port's winning goal, picking up a rebound off the stick of Tredway. With only 2 minutes remaining, Morris put the icing on the cake, firing the puck into the empty cor- ner. Assisted by LeFort and Bourgeois. Defenseman Bill Zaparanuik was picked as M.V.P. for his ex- ceptional work protecting Port's zone. Congratulations coaches and team, for your hard work and outstanding effort throughout the tournament. You fellows really are champions. Novice houseleague True to form, the novice house league delivered another nail biting game as David's Hairstyl- ing took on Van Camp Contracting. Van Camp drew first blood on a goal by Jason Whitworth just more than halfway through the first period. David's fought back to tie the score with just three minutes re- maining in the first. Joel Phoenix put it past the Van Camp netminder. Late in the second, Jordan McKay stole the puck and with lots of perseverence put it bet- ween the posts to put David's ahead. The action was end to end throughout the third period, but despite numerous chances neither team could beat the goalies. Final score David's 2, Van Camp 1.
