4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 27, 1990 We're Celebrating! This week marks the start of a special year for the staff and management of the Port LE Star as the newspaper commences its 125th year of publication in this community. Who would have guessed, when Edward Mundy began publication of this newspaper in 1866, under the name of the Port Perry Standard, that it would survive to celebrate this his- toric milestone. Newspapers have seen vast changes over the past centu- ry advancing from handset type (a time consuming process where every letter was picked up one at a time, to create news stories) to the the computers of today. Along the way hot metal casting of type, on a machine ' known asa Lin- otype, took over from the wooden and brass hand-set types, speeding up the pro- cess of typesettingimmensely. And the advent of offset printing, which became very popular in the early 1960's, gave even more versatilty to the pro- duction of newspapers making the process of typesetting and printing much more efficient and quick. Today, the Port Perry Star, is composed and printed on the most modern of equip- ment. The advances in typesetting equip- ment, computerized advertising programs Port Perry Star commences 125th year of publication and high speed presses now allow us to pro- duce the paper faster and more efficiently than ever thought possible. Over the next few months, leading up to the Star's actual 125th Anniversary date, Friday, August 16, 1991, we will be under- taking a number of different projects to celebrate this special occasion. The first of these will be the move to our new building at 188 Mary Street which is now in the final stages of construction. Target date for moving the Star's entire operation is January 1991 giving the paper a new home as we head into the next century. An official opening will be organized later inthe year. And another ~/ project which will be undertaken during the year is the publication of a special 125th Anniversary Historical issue of the newspaper. But for now, it's business as usual here at the Port Perry Star as we begin this very special year. Our readers will notice one small change starting this week on the Star's front page masthead, which will now incorporate the 125th Anniversary logo (seen above) for the next twelve months. Proud?
