Hearing Impaired 1-800-465-7735 £4 | Government of Canada Gouvernement du Canada Canada Region will send letter to Senate urging them to defeat the G.S.T. Durham Region council is writing a letter to the Senate asking them to defeat the GST. This action came after coun- cil received a letter from three mayors representing the larg- est and smallest municipalities across Canada. In their letter, Toronto May- or Art Eggleton, Elstow Mayor Brad Cabana and Dartmouth Mayor John Savage wrote about the hardships Canadians are already feeling because of the recession. "This recession makes the prospect of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax an even greater concern," the mayors wrote. As well as being an unneces- sary tax, they stated that the GST is unfair -- hitting low in- come Canadians the hardest. "There are other alterna- tives, from rationalizing our country's tax system to seeking the revenues to replace the manufacturers' sales tax from sources now currently under taxed." The mayors state that Cana- dians, across all party lines, are angry over the federal govern- ment's disregard of the opposi- tion to the tax and said that as elected community leaders, mayors and councillors should "stand up and represent (the people's) wishes." "We ask you, and/or your council at its next meeting to draft a letter to the Senate ask- ing them, in their final vote, to defeat the GST, or to the federal government urging it to with- draw this destructive and un- fair tax." Although Oshawa councillor Brian Nicholson was in favor of writing a letter, the NDP sup- porter had another suggestion. "Possibly in the future, in- stead of talking about a GST- free Canada, we should be talk- ing about a Mulroney-free Can- ada." The region's clerk, Cec Lundy, was instructed by coun- cil to write a letter to senate. With the on-set of winter just around the corner, Region- al Police are asking property owners within a 1.56 hours trav- elling radius of Pickering to check their properties for any clues to the girl's disappear- ance. They are especially appeal- ing to those who live in rural ar- eas, which would have been ac- cessible by car on April 16 last, the day Stanton disappeared.
