Tallying for J&D were Richard Sakanashi 1 goal, 1 assist, Jason Warner 1 goal, 1 assist, and Joe Curran 1 assist. The lone marker for Compton was Todd Wilbur from Jim Dun- can and Jim Fowler. The fourth game proved to be quite a comeback as Crandell's rallyed with four straight goals to come from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Sportsland 54. Sportsland Bantams face tough teams The Port Perry Sportsland Batam's had a busy week against tough competition, winning 1 and losing 3 games. Port started off on the road, tangling with always-powerful Millbrook. Sportsland put out perhaps their strongest perfor- mance against the green and white, but the effort was not reflected on the board as Millbrook scored 4 shorthanded goals on the way to an 11-3 win. Port's best period was the third. Down 8-0, Scott Heasman broke the goose-egg with a point shot off a Lou Whitfield pass. Lou then potted Port's second from a nice set up by Mark Cosway, who turn- ed in a fine effort replacing the in- jured Jeremy Norton. Chad Gar- vock completed the scoring in the final minute, assisted by Jason Coutoulakis. Friday night, Port hosted Bowmanville in their first meeting of the year and a strong overall effort resulted in a 7-0 Sportsland win. Broomball Undefeated Monsma put its perfect record on the line against Woody's. In a tight game, Monsma came on on top 2-1. Tom Powell counted both goals for the victor's with helpers going to Greg Lepine & Rich Schoer. Neil Woodrow, unassisted, counted for Woody' S. In Game 2 B&R/Swamp defeated Framer's 4-1. Brian Pomeroy had a big day with a goal and 2 assists. Mike Mole & Willie Edwards had 1 goal 1 assist each, Dave Canning 1 goal, Mike Mitchell 2 assists. Sarah Chapman, 11, has qualified for the Eastern Onta- rio Sectionals. The competition takes place in Peterborough from Nov. 15- 17. Sarah qualified for the sec- tionals after passing a battery of tests before the November 1 deadline. She will be competing against other skaters in the pre-Novice division. The East- ern Ontario division encom- passes an area from Uxbridge to Ottawa and north to Pettaw- awa. ) Sarah's determination and hard work has paid off for her. While other kids her age are en- Jjoying the lazy dog days of sum- mer, Sarah is at the rink up to 30 hours a week. In the winter, when ice time is at a premium, her hours are cut back to about 20 per week, even though the Port Perry Fig- ure Skating Club only receives about 10 hours of ice time at the Scugog Arena. That means Sarah has to travel at strange hours to neighboring arenas to get enough practice timein. Coach Michael Sanderson of Pine Ridge Skating School, of- ten picks Sarah up at 6 a.m. to take her skating at either the Uxbridge or Lindsay arena. Af- ter an intense workout, he drops her off at school. Some- times, when morning sessions are impossible, Sarah practices during the lunch hour. "Often the kids at school don't understand," Sarah's mother told the Star. "Skating is a very frustrating sport. Sarah has the opportuni- ty to go to the sectionals but she may not make the run-offs." In the pre-Novice division, competitors will only skate at the Eastern Ontario Section- als. Age wise, they do not quali- fy for the provincial or national competitions. But the sectionals will give skaters in Sarah's division a good evaluation of their skating ability. And if her dedication to the sport she loves is any indication Sarah Chapman has qualified for the Eastern Ontario Sectionals. of her ability, Sarah will have no problem obtaining her ulti- mate goal: The Olympics. Her mentor is award- winning figure skater Kurt Browning, who she has already had thep easure of meeting. Not only did the two talk about their similar interest, but Kurt gave Sarah a kiss.
