a OI NI III A EN ET ------ y= 32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 13, 1990 Legionaires split in two recent games The Port Perry Legionaires faced-off against Bowmanville on November 7. Bowmanville led a strong attack and led 4-0 in the 2nd when Port's Craig Laird tried to get the team back on track scoring on a beautiful effort as he stuffed one home. Assists going to Chambers and Bourgeois. Bowmanville came back with 4 more. Port picked up one more goal as Jay King found the twine Atoms win, tie On November 5, the Pineridge Atom #2 team travelled to Stouff- ville. Port opened the scoring in the first on a goal by Jamie Strickert assisted by Danny Lyons and Ian Parliament. In the second, Port dominated as the play was mostly in the Stouffville end and their efforts paid off as Danny Lyons scored unassisted. Stouffville pressed hard in the third but the strong goaltending of Heather Tredway and Jon Chambers thwarted all their ef- forts to earn the shutout. Port finished out the scoring in the third with a goal by Adam Hobbs on a penalty shot for a final score of 3-0. On November 8, it was home against Lindsay in another seesaw battle with this team. Lindsay jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Port got two back in the second to Lindsay's one for a 4-2 score after two. Scoring for Port were Ian Parliament assisted by Jamie Strickert and Danny Lyons and Danny Lyons assisted by Scott Harper. The comeback began in the third as a very hard playing Danny Lyons added two more for his hat trick which tied it up. Assists to Justin Halligan, Scott Jeffrey, Kevin Cochrane and Blayne Kinnunen. Lindsay added a fifth goal with one minute left in the game. But Port fought hard and Scott Jeffrey equalized with just thir- teen seconds to go. Assists - Justin Halligan and Danny Lyons. Final score 5-5. Eagles prevail Senior Boys In a fast paced floor hockey game played at the R.H. Cornish school gym on Monday, November 5, the Golden Eagles trounced the Red Raiders by a 11 to 5 score. This game was never in doubt as the Eagles led 6 to 2 after one period. Both Matt Youmans and Steve Elliot scored 3 times each for the Eagles this period. Jessie Thorn and Andrea Perlarde notched the goals for the Red Raiders. The onslaught con- tinued in the second period as the Eagles scored from unanswered goals to increase their lead to 10-2. Jamie Irvine, Steve Elliot, Matt Youmans and Rick Olaisen got the goals this period. The Red Raiders made a game of it in the third period, thanks to Chad Mitchell who scored all three goals for his team. Matt Youmans scored the Eagles only goal this period. The three stars of the game were Matt Youmans (5 goals), Steve Elliot (4 goals) and Chad Mitchell (3 goals). ° David Vershuuren and Mark Suppelsa also played strong games for the Golden Eagles. Bowmanville managed 2 more as they defeated Port. Port left the Scugog Arena with only 2 goals. Nice try fellows. On October 11, the Uxbridge Bruins hosted the Port Legionaires for the first time this season. Uxbridge scored with on- ly 3 minutes left in the 1st period. Port tied it with 38 seconds left in the first by a blistering shot from Billy Zaparanuik. Assists going to Geer and Shrigley. Ux- bridge took the lead six minutes into the 2nd period and struck again a minute later. Three minutes left in the se- cond, Port's Craig Laird walked out from the corner and tore a rip- per by the Bruin's sieve. Working hard on the play was Lefort and Tredway each picking up an assist and making the score 3-2. Port is a 3rd period team, and this was displayed here again. 6 minutes into the third, Kent Lefort ripped on home from the slot in a solo effort to tie the game. 3 minutes later Jay King tore a blistering slap-shot into the bot- tom left-hand corner. Shrigley picked up an assist on the play. Only 2 minutes later Bill Zaparanuik meshed one in a scramble out in front. Geer and What a contest Bowmanville 3 Whitby Auto Wreckers 2 On Thursday, November 8, the high flying Whitby Auto Wreckers took on Bowmanville in Blackstock on neutral ice. The play was fast and furious from the opening whistle. End to end rushes were common place, only to have both goalies shut down the opposing offence at every turn. At 8:06 of the opening period, Bowmanville opened the scoring with Whitby coming back at 4:01 to score one of their own to tie the game at one. The first period end- ed in a one all tie. At 7:12 of the second period, Bowmanville lit up the scoreboard again to take a 2-1 lead only for Dave Jameisons boys to come storming back again 2 minutes later to tie the game at 2. Whitby Auto Wreckers turned up the heat a crank and a half to try and force Bowmanville to make a costly mistake, which they eventually did, when Chris (Kip) Jameison had a clean cut break-away on the Bowmanville goaltender. One on one was the name of the game, only to have the goaltender shut him down on this all important opportunity. The advantage suddenly swit- ched in favour of Bowmanville. The game was winding down when Lady Luck left town on the Whitby Auto Wreckers. Bowman- ville slid the puck under Whitby Auto Wreckers goalies to take the all important go ahead goal with only 5 seconds left on the clock. Five beep-beeps later it was all over. Final score Bowmanville 3 - Whitby Auto Wreckers 2. At the conclusion of the game both teams shook hands in a nice display of good sportsmanship, and both teams vowing there will be a rematch. Scoring for Whitby Auto Wreckers was Jay Fletcher unassisted and Mark Sauter from Jay Fletcher. Playing in goal for Auto Wreckers was Ryan Puckrin. ~ Tredway assisting. Uxbridge managed a powerplay goal but it wasn't suf- ficient as Port defeated them 5-4. A tough The Novice Rep team was host to the always tough Bowmanville team on Friday night. Port opened up the scoring in the first minute of play with Bowmanville answering 3 times before Port once again caught one between the pipes. Bowmanville finished off the second period with another goal to widen the gap. However, in the third period, the Port squad treated the fans to some heavy-duty hockey and a display of fine hockey skills as several attempts were made to light the scoreboard. It finally paid off with only 2 minutes re- maining. A further attempt was Nice outing Port! When the final buzzer went, Port was behind by only 1 goal. Great game, boys! A good effort was displayed by the ever hardworking forwards, Scott Brownson and Jeremy Heyworth was well as defense- ment Nick Pelyk and Jeff Ashton. Scoring for Port was Ryan McQuade 2 goals, Aaron Chambers 2 assists, Chad Lance 1 goal, Mark Delaney, Greg Bruton and Chris Monsma 1 assist eacy. The Novice Pearce Auctioneers next home game is Friday, November 23 against Port Hope. Bantams defeated On Monday, November 5th, the Goreski Insulators hosted a very different team from Stouffville. Port were first on the board when Duane Empringham put a beauty of a pass on the stick of Simon Traynor. Traynor shot the puck and it hit Jeff Card in front of the net, redirected off their defensmen's skate and into their net. This goal came at the 10:09 mark of the first frame. Stouffville scored the next two' goals at the seven thirty mark and then thirty seconds later. Port Perry was the only one to score in the second by Sean McEnaney with the assist to Scott Wylie at the 8:00 mark. Now with the score tied at two, Stouffville controlled the third as they scored two more goals. Port went down to defeat to make their record 7-2 on the year.
