i i NE SE a First victory of the season over Black Hawks PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 13, 1990 -- 3) Pee Wee B team just keeps plugging away The Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wee 2 team has shown that they can play head to head with the best in their league. In the last few games they've demonstrated some heads-up play and a lot of hustle. However, sustaining that level of play for three periods and some defensive lapses have resulted in some closely contested matches that produced some lopsided final scores. Such was the case on November 1st when Port travelled to Millbrook for a regular season game. Except for 3 minutes in the second period, Port skated with, and challenged the aggressive Millbrook team and matched them goal for goal. In that short three minute time span, Millbrook launched an endless barrage of shots on Port's netminders and managed to light up the goal light 4 times. Once Port regained their com- posure, Jamie Trick and Dylan Ferguson relinquished only one additional goal for the remainder of the game. In the 8-3 final, the scoring for the Overhead Door squad was shared between two players - Greg Thompson and Matt Phillips. Greg scored the first 2, one unassisted and one with help from Matt. Greg in return assisted on Matt's goal. Although a similar outcome, there was a different sequence of events in the Saturday game against visiting Manvers. Port opened the. scoring in the 1st period with Kevin Hobbs tucking one in under the goalie after Brad Morton fought to gain control in the corner and passed out to Kent Taylor. Manvers tied it up in the opening minute of the 2nd and then went ahead before Greg Thompson replied before the 2nd would end. Taylor and Phillips helped out once again on Greg's goal Port had great chances in the balance of the second frame but failed to break the tie. The third period belonged to Manvers alone; again scoring in the first minute and going on to pot 4 more unanswered goals before the final buzzer. In an exhibition game against a Bowmanville select team, it look- ed like Port was going to put one in the win column. After taking a 3-2 lead into the final period, Bowmanville tied it up in the final minutes with a man advantage. Scoring in this game for Port came from Kent Taylor from Kirk Swain and Brad Shanley in the first; Greg Thompson from Matt Phillips and Todd Parry No luck for Atom boys Malmont Atom A's are not lack- ing in desire but they're coming up short on the scoreboard in their last 3 league games. November 2, they played against a well organized Bowmanville team and came out without a win. Friday, November 9, Port hosted the same Bowmanville squad losing 5-2. It was end to end throughout the first period. They went into the second period scoreless until Bowmanville pop- ped in 2. Daryl McE., and Adam J. assisted on a goal by Dillan W. who was at the corner of the net and took advantage of a pass to him. He quickly fired it past the goalie. Bowmanville scored 2 rore before a hard working Seth Gray passed to Daryl McEnaney who took an awesome wrist shot and put it upstairs for Port's second. Saturday, November 10, these Scugog Youth Soccer Club ANNUAL = General Meeting guys travelled to Uxbridge. Ux- bridge came out on top with a slim 2-1 win. Uxbridge was on the board first midway through the first period. Port tied it up with a great play by Daryl McE., and Shane N. assisting on a goal by Mike M. who was waiting on the doorstep. Nice goal guys! Uxbridge put in one more to take the win. Justin Halligan and Kevin Cochrane played with last 2 games and both boys put in a fine performance. MANVERS On Monday night, the Scugog Overhead Door Pee Wee "B's" were hosted in Manvers for a regular season match. This proved to be a pretty ex- citing contest with: lots of hitting and end to end action. A bit of rivalry was evident in this one and Port could have gotten its first win of the season, had it not been for a couple of pretty nifty goaltenders named Marnoch and Perry. Our side had numerous good scoring chances but were foiled again and again by this dastardly duo. The "Doors" put on a spurt late in the third to give Manvers a scare when they pulled to within one but the opposition scored an empty netter when coach Gracie opted for the extra attacker. Scoring for Port were Brad Morton, Kent Taylor and Greg Thompson with assists going to Kirk Swain (2), Kent Taylor, Matt Phillips, Chris Drury and Greg Thompson. This game was by far the best effort of the season with shades of the Maple Leafs being apparent to this point. BLACKHAWKS On Saturday morning the team met up with the Blackhawks of the Little NHL at the home of the Oshawa Generals for an exhibi- tion match. Desperate for their first win, and with threats of being charg- ed with impersonating hockey team, the 'Doors' came on the ice a determined-looking squad. This was shortlived however as Oshawa scored after only 9 se- cond and led 2-0 after one. Port began to chip away in the second and were tied at 2 at the second buzzer on goals by Brad Morton and Kirk Swain with assists going to Kent Taylor (2) and Greg Thompson. Both teams looked like they had too many pancakes for breakfast through much of this contest. Oshawa opened the scoring early in the third to pull ahead by one and it wasn't until midway this period that the 'Doors' finally got their act together and started to skate. They were to score 3 unanswered goals to win this one 5-3. Snipers for Port were Jon Jamieson, Brad Shanly and Matt Phillips with assists going to Jon (2) and Brad Morton (2). It was drinks all around in the dressing room after this one, as the first win of the season is now behind us. OMEMEE Regular season play continued on Saturday evening, in Port Perry against Omemee. The teams looked even during the warm-up and the traditional handshakes, but when the puck was dropped it was painfully ob- vious that it was going to be a long night for the home team. Ten times the light behind the home goal would flash giving goaltenders Holtby and Dylan Ferguson third degree burns on the backs of their necks. The defence looked like Swiss cheese and various items of lower body protection could be seen lying on the ice as the Omemee forewards swooped in from all angles. Our forewards were in a state of confusion must of the night unleashing shots which would hardly break a pane of glass. The few which were on the net did lit- tle to test the Omemee goaltenders. Twice Port scored on goals by Greg Thompson and Tim Fitzpatrick. All team members must give a 100% effort all the time to be successful. Many thanks to Jon Jamieson, Gavin Carnegie, Kevin Hobbs and Daryl Holtby who came up from the house league to fill in gaps caused by injuries and prior com- mitments. They played well and were a big help. We wish Jamie Trick and Rob Gracie speedy recoveries from their ailments.
