30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 13, 1990 MoJack snipers cold in two straight losses Things are not getting much better for the Port Perry ModJacks. With a big 7-0 victory over the Uxbridge Bruins November 4, the team had a chance to get some momentum going and start the climb up in the stand- ings with two games last week against Bowmanville and Lake- field. But the offense sputtered to a near stop as the MoJacks lost to Bowmanville 3-2 Nov. 6, and were downed at home Sun- day night 4-2 by the Chiefs. After spotting the Chiefs a 2-0 lead Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, MoJacks man- aged to make it 2-1 late in the middle period as Danny Maw fired from just outside the goal crease. At 2:59 of the third, John Lally knotted the game up at 2- 2 as he was able to flip a puck over a fallen Chief netminder with Warren Geer and Steve Wyrozub getting the assists. But four minutes later," Mike Markwork deflected a puck past Dwayne Mackie for what proved to be the winning goal. Chiefs added an empty- netter to finish out the scoring in the final seconds of the game and take home the 4-2 victory. The MoJacks seemed to be off balance through much of this game and were not able to mus- ter any sustained pressure on the Lakefield net. In Bowmanville last Tues- day evening it was a different story as the MoJacks had all kinds of chances to salt the game away, but lostit 3-2. NO LUCKATALL Just when it looked like the ModJacks had thrown off the bad luck that dogged them in sever- al early games this season, the team went into Bowmanville Nov. 6 and Lady Luck gave them the icy shoulder once again. ModJacks played well enough for a win, or at least a tie, but came home empty- handed after losing 3-2 to the first place Eagles. They had all kinds of de- cent scoring chances, especially in the third period when they out-shot the home town squad 16-5, but the puck simply re- fused to cross the goal line. For the game, MoJacks fired 47 pucks on goal and the Eagles could muster just 21. MoJacks bounced rubber over the net, along the red line and through the crease. The Eagles, on the other hand, must have sent Lady Luck a dozen roses before the game. They caught a big break early in the first on a MoJack power Play when the puck was blocked at the Eagle blue line sending Armstrong in alone on Drew Campbell. And they took a 2-0 lead on their own power play late in the frame as Nick Dennis found the range. Captain Brad Menzies fi- nally put one behind Chris Mas- sey on a power play mid-way through the second to make it a 2-1 game, but Eagle captain Glen Campbell upped it to 3-1 on a shot from a tairly sharp an- gle. ModJacks pressed constant- ly through the final 20 minutes, but the only goal came with 1:59 to play as Jarrett Harman drilled one from the slot. Warren Geer earned as- sists on both ModJack goals, and Menzies also had a two-pointer with a goal and an assist. This was a quality hockey game with plenty of wide-open action and lots of heavy hits dished out by both sides. With John Harman and Rob Willetts on the shelf with The Port Perry MoJacks have been getting lots of scor- ing chances like this one recently, but have not been able to turn those chances into goals. The team lost 4-2 at home to two-game suspensions, Mo- Jacks called up Jason Co- chrane, Steve Laird and Brett Puckrin. They saw plenty of ice time and turned in decent games against a tough hockey game. SLAP SHOTS: After 11 games so far this season, the MoJacks sport arecord of six losses, three wins and two ties for eight points. It has been a frustrating start to the season for the de- fending Central League champs. Those six losses have all TE talls on the MoJack fortunes) been by a single goal, and one of the ties came when the opposi- tion scored in the final minute. In 11 games, they have sur- rendered 43 goals (not counting empty-netters) and they have scored 49 goals. The team is having trouble with consistency. In a couple of games when the. offense has broken loose, the team has sur- rendered a lot of goals. And in games when the team has given up just a couple of goals, the offense can't seem to get un-tracked. While the season is still Si PE rh Lakefield Sunday night and last Tuesday came out on the short end of a 3-2 score in Bowmanville. (see story for de- Sy BE ST ' less than one-third complete, the losses are slowly starting to add up. The team has an important week of hockey coming up, starting tonight (Nov. 14) in Ajax. On Saturday evening, the MoJacks travel to Little Brit- ain, and Sunday night, they are at home to the first place Bow- manville Eagles for a 7:30 face- off. There would be no better time for the MoJacks to shake the early season doldrums and start putting some points up on the standings board. Strong performance by Juniors November 11 saw the Ivory Forest Junior Ringette team go- ing up against the Junior team from Ajax. Port Perry scored twelve goals which were evenly split throughout the two periods. Two of the six goals in the first period were scored by Denna Lovering who played a strong game. Denna was very ably assisted on her efforts by Kim Poppleton. Port's third goal came off the stick of Val Payne who was assisted by Michelle Fitzpatrick. Meagan Marlowe added her marker when she scored unassisted at the 3:14 mark of the first period. Number five was netted by Karen Kett who joined forces with Val Payne to score her goal. With only twenty-one seconds remain- ing in the first period, Shannon Fox slipped a nicely placed shot past the Ajax goaltender. Assisting Shannon on this effort was Meagan Marlowe. The period ended with Port's Junior team leading by a score of 6-2. The second period opened with Ajax scoring to bring the score to 6-3. Twenty seconds later Lynd- say Dutkewich fired the ring into the net to bring the score to 7-3. Dawn Doucette and Jennifer Josephson earned assists for their efforts. From this point on Port Perry took control and went on to score five more unanswered goals. Kim Poppleton earned her third assist of the game on a goal scored by JoAnn Zaal. Jennifer Josephson and Dawn Doucette combined to score two more goals with Michelle Fitzpatrick earning an assist on their second effort of the period. JoAnn Zaal then scored her second goal of the game assisted by Meagan Marlowe and Jennifer Morden. Denna Lovering, who opened the scoring in the game, finished off the goal totals. With 2:23 re- maining in the game Denna team- ed with Val Payne and Jennifer Morden to bring Port's final tally to twelve. Port Perry played a strong game. They dominated the play with excellent passing and skating skills. The defensive players consisting of Kim Pop- pleton, Jennifer Morden and Michelle Fitzpatrick kept Ajax's shots on net down to a minimum in the first period. Tracey Pelow came up with some key saves in the final period. The forward lines worked well together and combin- ed with the solid defence. Port controlled a good share of the game. The final score was 12-3 in favour of Port Perry. The team should be congratulated on their excellent effort. The hours of practise time are starting to pay off. Wings prevail 4-1 It was. a Red Wing victory in Junior Floor Hockey action at R.H. Corish on Monday, Nov. 5th, with a final score of 4-1. In a hard played first period the Golden Hawks took a one goal lead, scored by Matthew MacMaster. The second period belonged to the Red Wings who netted all 4 of the their goals. Michael Wiseman, Jeff Kane, Greg Langford and Tyson Beesley each scored one goal. The third period saw both teams playing good floor hockey but it remained a scoreless period.
