2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 13, 1990 Signs opposing landfill sites thrown into dump In an ironic twist of fate, signs opposing two candidate landfill sites in Ward 4, Scugog, landed in the garbage last week. Cartwright's newly formed citizen action group, Zero Gar- bage, posted about 75 signs along road allowances and on hydro poles in the Blackstock- Nestleton area. On November 7, members of Zero Garbage noticed the signs were missing. Sign committee chairman Terri Ness told the Port Perry Star that phone calls were made to the highway depart- ment, Scugog Township office and to hydro. A spokesperson at the High- way Department in Manches- ter told Mrs. Ness that they had taken down some of the signs because they were posted in prohibited areas. Signs of any kind cannot be posted on hydro poles or on road allowances. Mrs. Ness was allowed to re- trieve the signs from a highway department dumpster. Only 15 of the 75 signs were recovered. "A lot of work went into these," she told the Star as she was hauling the signs out of the dumpster. The committee painted old real estate signs white and then painted a message on each one. She hopes that once Cart- wright's battle is fought, other citizen groups can use the signs. Over the weekend, Zero Gar- bage members reposted the signs along with 150 recently completed signs. This time, the signs were placed on private residences. "The signs will keep coming," Mrs. Ness told the Port Perry Star. "We're going to stop the dump. That's the point."
