MolJacks find the win column in a big way Finally, those pucks are starting to find the net for the Port Perry MoJacks. The MoJacks made it two wins a row Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as they romped to a 7-0 shut-out over arch-rival Uxbridge Bruins. It was their third win of the season, and coupled with a pair of ties, gave the team eight points in the tight Central Jun- ior C League standings. And it was a nifty shut-out performance by Drew Camp- bell, making his debut in a Mo- Jack uniform. Campbell, a 17 year old from Oshawa played AAA Mid- get hockey last season and was protected in the draft by the Generals. He was assigned to the Le- gionaires who eventually opted to go with two goalies with Jun- ior B experience. The ModJacks signed him to a card last week and judging from his performance Sunday night against the Bruins, it's easy to see why team officials are delighted he decided to play in Port Perry this season. Though he faced just 29 shots, Campbell displayed a very quick glove hand, covered angles well and was always in the right position to make the saves. He was at his best early in the third period with the Mo- Jacks two men short when he was forced to make three quick stops in a row to preserve the shut-out. "We are very happy to have him with the club. He comes to play and he has a fine attitude," said general manager Murray Parliament. Campbell was not the only player making a debut for the club Sunday night. Talented forward Warren Geer is back in uniform after a stint with Newmarket. He's been re-united with Brad Menzies and John Har- man, his line-mates from last season, and that will spell trou- ble for opposition goalies. Modacks didn't waste any time jumping into an early lead Sunday night as Kevin Desrosi- ers lit up the red light just a few minutes after O Canada. Jim Vernon, with his first of two, and Al Avery gave the MoJacks a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. They continued to pepper the Uxbridge net in the middle frame and added four more goals by Kevin Gibson, Vernon, Greg French and Dan Maw. Gibson had a couple assists to go with his goal and came out of the game with broken nose. Vernon had one assist for a three-point evening. The scor- ing touch, coupled with his tough, physical play has turned Vernon into a highly effective two-way player. For the Bruins, it was the second straight loss as they fell 6-3 to Lakefield at home Friday night. The ModJacks were full marks for the victory, although the game was a scrambly affair for stretches. They out-shot Uxbridge 41- 29, which is nothing new this season as the team has been getting the majority of shots in Just about every outingso far. But this night, the puck was going in the net, and that's a positive sign. SLAPSHOTS: Bruin de- fenseman Jamie Showers had to be taken from the ice on stretcher after he took an awk- ward tumble into the boards be- hind his net. He tried to get to his feet, then collapsed to the ice and at- tendents from Port Perry ambu- lance were called to the arena to tend to thisinjury. He had little or no feeling in his legs and was taken direct- ly to Toronto Western Hospital. His condition on Monday was described as "fair" but he was reported to be gaining some feeling in his legs. It's not known how longhe may stayin hospital. The big defenseman was chasing a MoJack on a partial breakaway when he seemed to lose his balance and crashed backwards into the boards. ModJacks have a big test to- night (Tues. Nov. 6) as they journey to Bowmanville to meet the first place and un-defeated Eagles. Last time these clubs hooked up the game ended 9-8 for the Eagles, and ModJacks no doubt will be out to change that around. And this coming dunday night at the Scugog Arena, the Lakefield Chiefs will be the visi- tors for a 7:30 faceoff. , With Chris Arsenault on the shelf with a broken ankle, Goreski Bantams defeat Uxbridge On Monday, October 29, the Port Perry Bantam #1 team played host to Uxbridge. The Goreski Insulators, spon- sored by Ken and Dianne Goreski, played a very slow paced two periods with no ticks on the tally sheet for the home team. Ux- bridge was first to score at the ten minute mark of the first. Neither teams scored in the se- cond, as the Port team did not play to the potential. Coach 'Blades' tossed a few words around the dressing rrom during the second intermission which seemed to have great effect on the team as they emerged in the third to score four unanswered goals. Scoring the first are, for Port, Jeff Card with assists going to linemates Duane Empringham and Dave Pashley. This goal was scored at the 11:17 mark. The second goal was scored by Pashley with assists to Card and Mike Sluggett, at the 8 minute mark. The third goal was scored by Scott Wylie with assists to linemates Lindsay Parry and Sean McEnaney. This goal was scored at the seven minute mark. The final goal, with 45 seconds left, was scored by Card, second of the night, with assists to Pashley and Empringham. Port Perry's next game is an afternoon match against Ux- bridge in Uxbridge on Sunday and host Lindsay the following night on home turf. Game time is 7:30. See ya all there. Record stands at 7,1,1 MoJacks are thin along the blue line. Al Avery saw a lot of action on defense Sunday night, and Rob Willetts will miss a couple after he was tagged with an ""in- stigator" penalty in a scrap with a Bruin. The team has been getting fine work from veterans Rob Metcalfe, Bill Lawrenson and Phil McBride, and more ice time seems to be helping rookie Steve Wyrozub make the ad- justment to Junior C hockey. B i! go. Kim Coates, and Sarah Smith, of Prince Albert Public School hold the trophies they won at recent cross country meets. At this past weekends Canada Meet in Etobicoke Kim placed third, and Sarah, seventh In their age groups. Both were members of the Durham Excels Team which placed first overall. Previously Kim had placed seventh at the Durham Central meet, and fourth at the Provincials. Sa- rah placed second at the Durham Central meet, and fourth at the provincials. Win, tie for Pee Wee Legionaires The Port Perry Pee Wee #1 team sponsored by the Legion Branch 419 played there 8th and 9th games of regular season play over the weekend. There 8th game against Bowmanville. Port came out flying against this tough organization with LeFort scoring just 2 minutes in- to the game. Picking up assists were Clarke and Laird. Port managed to put two more lights up on the board in the first frame. Scoring was Tredway and Bourgeois. The playmakers were King and Hobbs with one each, and Chambers collecting 2. At the end of the first stanza the scoreboard read Port Perry 3 and Bowmanville 2. In the second period Bowman- ville managed to beat the always tough Port Perry goalies Scot Prechitko and Brandon Ham- mond 3 times. Port scored only once. LeFort put out a nice effort sprawling toward the goalmouth and tipping it through the Bowmanville netminders legs. The play was set up wonderfully by Morris and Laird. At the end of thirty minutes the score was, Toros 4 and Legionaires 4. Onto the third, which has always been good to the Porto- nians. Bowmanville ran into a lit- tle penalty trouble late in the third and Port capitalized. Scoring was Chambers set up nicely by Hobbs and Morris. Port's tying goal came from the stick of King set up by LeFort. The final score was 6-6 in a hard fought game by both teams. An excellent game. vs. Oshawa The Legion's next game was against the Oshawa Major Blackhawks. This was an exhibi- tion game. Oshawa threatened first, scoring twice in the first four minutes. Before the first period ended, Port managed to get one goal. Scoring on a bullet shot was King. The play was set up by Chambers. At the end of the first it was 2-1, Oshawa led. The second period was well fought by both organizations. There was no scoring, but in the Oshawa end all you could hear was ping, zing, ding, dong, (and you get the point) as Port hit the iron posts several times. The third period was different as the goals started to come for the Legionaires. The first goal came just 8 seconds in, as Bourgeois skated down the right wing with great ease, blowing one by the Oshawa netminder, who had a floppy style. Assisting on Bourgeois' goal were Chambers and Hobbs. Bourgeois got his second, late in the third period when he slid one by the goaltender. It was a one man effort. Tredway ended the scoring with a tip-in off a nice pass from Gerr. Also assisting was Zap! The final score was the Legionaires 4 and the Blackhawks 2. The line of Chambers, Bourgeios and Hobbs performed exceptionally well over the weekend. The Legion received beautiful new "away" jerseys just recently and got the first win with these sweaters, against Oshawa. Thanks to Minor Hockey and the Legion for purchasing these wonderful jerseys. In league play this team has compiled 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. In Exhibition games Port has 3 wins, 0 losses and 0 ties. All this adds up to a not to shab- by record of 7 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. Ports next game will feature Port Perry hosting the ever tough Bowmanville on Wednesday night at 7:45 eastern daylight time. Come and see a great game!
