i Paula Lishman Ltd. marketing manager Alison Mayne shows two ways to wear one of Lishman's fur hats. The hat can be worn about a dozen different ways. Unique, yet versatile. Those two words can be used to describe the beautiful new collection of fur coats designed by Blackstock resident Paula Lishman. Whether teamed up with an evening gown or a pair of jeans, a Lishman fur coat can go to the opera or for a round on the town. Although many have tried to copy her technique, no one has ever been able to capture the unique design she patented. Sheer beaver, mink and muskrat pelts are cut into fine strips and then spun with a cot- ton fibre to keep them durable. The strips are then knitted and weaved into beautiful jackets, coats, ponchos and hats. Lamb and fox are used as accents. The finished product is not only lightweight but also allows its wearer to move freely. "Paula often says, Don't ask me about fashion, because I don't have a clue,' " her market- ing manager Alison Mayne told the Port Perry Star. But the idea of knitting pelts to create a product with fur in- side and out may never have en- tered Ms. Lishman's mind if she hadn't lived in Northern Labrador. There, fur coats were worn exclusively for their warmth with the fur on the inside of the garment. Although 80 per cent of her inventory is sold in Japan, the coats can be purchased across Canada at many specialty stores. And Srine the winter months (starting this weekend) her fashions can be seen at the school house at 62 Old Scugog Street in Blackstock.
