The hot wind was none oth- er than Charlie Farquharson, that irascible, hay-seéd from up Parry Sound way. The occasion was the first annual gala fund-raising din- ner for the Scugog Memorial Li- brary "And Charlie (in his real life Don Herron) was the guest of honour for this special event. By the time he was finished his 45-minute monologue, Charlie had poked good- natured (we think) fun at Brian Mulroney, General Motors, the SkyDome, the metric system, the Post Office, and several of the 175 people in the audience. The gala dinner was a dressup attoir and Charlie had dug out his finest Sunday-go-to- meetin' togs, just for the event. Over his trademark ratty old wool sweater, Charlie wore an equally ratty evening coat, black slacks (vintage 1958) and a pair of brown work boots. Perched on his head was an old cap and a bright red flower filled his lapel. Charlie, who's been per- forming his unique brand of comedy for years, is as Canadi- an as Saturday Night Hockey aon CBC, and nobody is safe from his acid barbs of wit of wis- dom. He took jabs at Scugog Mayor Howard Hall and all members of council, MP Ross Stevenson, MPP Gord Mills, Li- brary Board chairman Marg Scott, former chairman Marg Wilbur, chief librarian Suzanne White, and well known local re- altor Ralph Fairman. And obviously well pre- pared for his visit to Scugog, Charlie had more than one com- ment about the garbage dump issuein Ward 4. But some of his best lines were saved for the Senate (Can- ada's largest day care centre, and the only museum where the fossiles are still breathing) and Prime Minister Mulroney (he treats Canadians like I treat my mushrooms: keep them in the dark and cover them with BS) And through it all, he did his usual masterful job of total- ly fracturing the English lan- guage, every phrase of the way. Charlie was introduced to the audience by Joel Aldred, who called him a "Canadian who has made his mark in many yparts of the world." arlie promptly returned the compliment, saying Aldred has a voice that "sounds like bumblebees in ajar." He has the uncanny ability to stretch his often "off-colour" humour to the limits of good taste, all the while keeping his audience chuckling an teeter- It was all good fun and all in aid of 'a good cause: the Scu- gog Memorial Library. The dinner which included a raffle and auction, was held at the Catholic Church Hall in Port Perry October 18. Library Board chairman Marg Scott said later she was "very pleased with the turn- out" (tickets were $60 each) and expects the evening will net the Library in excess of $5,000. "We are hoping that this dinner will become an annual fund-raising affair for the li- brary," she said. She expressed gratitude for all those who donated gifts for the raffles and auction and to all who helped in any way to make the evening a success. The proceeds will be used by the Board to purchase new books, videos and other materi- al for the Library collections. - ing. WS5 to air Ghost Road story The television show "W5" will be airing a story for Hallo- ween on two of Town- ship's most famous residents. The segment, which will air Sunday will be a piece on Ghost Road, and the Murray House ghost. According to Mayor Howard Hall, they contacted him about the story, and even though he considers it an old story, he . stated that the show has come up with an interesting and dif- ferent twist.
