38 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 16, 1990 'Nestleton-Caesarea news items From Page 20 school named after him in Port time resident of ,the area, and Perry, "The S.A. Cawker Public recently honoured for his many School." From early recollections years as a teacher; by having a of his first scheol in Caesarea, The Environment by Janet Banting HELPING THE THIRD WORLD There may be some people wondering why | am writ- #2 ing about the Third World when garbage is such a hot topic in Scugog Township these days. Let me explain. What hap- pened is that | got rolling on reviewing Barry Commoner's book, "Making Peace With The Planet," and it has taken # 8 me on an unexpected detour. Please bear with mel" I'll get & g back to waste reduction soon. : : Meanwhile, I'd like to expand on something | men- 8 tioned in last week's column on "World Poverty and the En- 8 vironment." | may not have managed to convince every reader to become concerned about Third World poverty, # but this one is devoted to the people who want practical 8 suggestions about how they can help. : Oxfam-Canada is a group that has been supporting & 2 projects aimed at promoting self-sufficiency in countries § #8 throughout the Third World since 1963. Their program & @ called Shareplan is for people who make a regular monthly § donation; and who receive a newsletter twice a year to 8 bring them up-to-date on Oxfam efforts around the world. 8 Every time | receive one of these newsletters and learn 8 about the practical help that Oxfam workers are giving to 8 the world's poor, | know that our family's modest monthly 8 donation is being well-spent. You can learn more about Ox- B fam's work by calling their toll free number, 1-800-387- § 8 4760. Ask them to send you a copy of their handout "Fa- #8 stand better why so many of the world's people are hungry. = Another way you can support Oxfam's work is by buy- & @ ing Bridgehead products-things that have been produced 8 by small cooperative groups in Third World nations. As & 8 their catalogue states, when you buy these items as gifts, & B your money gives twice! The earthdance store in Oshawa §& @ [67 King St. E.] has a few Bridgehead [and Unicef] items, & ® but many more are available by writing to Bridgehead at & ® 487 Lewis St, Ottawa, Ont. K2P OT2 [phone: 613-567- & # 1455) to request a catalogue. The catalogue would be a § #8 great thing for a church or community group to promote, and there are some terrific Christmas ideas in it! : That brings me to UNICEF-the United Nations Chil- & dren's Fund, an organization that has been working on be- § half of the world's children since 1946. 250,000 children die 8 every week in Third World countries [14 million every yearl], most of them from diseases that can be easily pre- vented. Very modest amounts of money accomplish mira- cles there. Our own children can offer enormous help by ® carrying along a Unicef box for donations when they go "trick or treating" on Halloween night. What could be easi- er? This Halloween program is a simple but amazingly ef- § fective way of having our children give aid to the millions of § children worldwide who are so much less fortunate. Last § year, Canadian children raised $3.5 million! We can all help & 8 out painlessly around Halloween time with donations of § #2 small change that, in most cases, will not even be missed. § § This year, let's be sure to encourage our own kids:to carry g a Unicef box and to have change ready for the children who come to the door. We could even take up collections where we work, or at the Halloween dances or parties we attend. It all adds up! Give me a call [985-3225] if you would like to borrow a ® video about Unicef. | have one directed at young school & children [Grades K-4] in which well-known author Robert § 8 Munsch explains to a class what Unicef does, and another for older students [Grades 6-11] in which kids from De- # grassi High do ga: "rap on rights." There are also two short & 8 pieces aimed at informing adults about Unicef. You can §g #2 learn more about Unicef programs by calling the Ontario of- 8 fice at 333 Eglinton Avenue East in Toronto, phone: 487- & 8 4153. Unicef also has a cata with stationery and gift § g ideas. 8 5 Please don't go away with the idea that | care only for # the starving children of the Third World, and not for the hun- gry closer to home - | am also an active supporter of the lo- § cal food bank. | believe | am not alone in thinking that the % time has come for more of us to realize that humanitarian efforts are not something that we should be leaving to the & 8 churches. Every single one of us should be taking part, & whether we give a lot or give a little-of our time, and/or of § our money. The era of greed is supposedly over - we can & help to prove it by making a few small sacrifices that will § bring very substantial benefits to people who genuinely # 8 need our help. ; EEA through many experiences of horse & buggy days, etc, Mr. Cawker recalled many stories of an active life which has included various vacations as they raised their four sons; years not always as effluent as we expect life to be today. The speaker was thanked and a gift presented to Mr. Cawker by Gwen. A tape "The Master's Touch" by Tommy Hunter was enjoyed, and Gwen closed with a poem 'Leisure Time" in Grandma's Day. Norma Frew reported on the District Executive meeting held at the home of president Mrs. Cathcart, Kendal, and the fun fair to be at Solina Oct. 16. Bowman- ville is the hostess branch. A card was signed for Irene McKee in hospital, an Oct. birthday, and a 45th wedding anniversary, to be mailed. Meeting closed with singing The Queen and W.I, Grace. Lunch was served by Norma and Gwen assisting the hostess. Apprecia- tion to all was voiced by Bertha McLaughlin. November meeting to be held at the home of Grace Bajema, Nov. 14. at 1:30 p.m. Topic - Public Relations. Plan to attend! Welcome Home A warm welcome home to Neta Fish, Cadmus, who has been holidaying with her 94 year Aunt Jane Boyes and cousin Connor of Carnduff, Sask. for the past two weeks. Weather was warm but very dry and no rain in sight. Before Neta left for home; relatives and friends "hosted'" a lovely tea for her; a real festive send-off. The friendliness of the Westerners is well known! A great bundle of news for this week - and some goodies for next week - left on the shelf!
