Ge? | NR NEE NEREETAER EE a 19 TYAS Iw [sO 4 -- PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE -- Wednesday, October 10, 1990 Be cautious buying on the spot Shoppers looking for a fair deal at fairgrounds, ex- hibitions -or consumer shows should do some research before buying big- ticket items, experts advise. "Our Consumer Services Bureaus get a lot of com- plaints from people who have signed contracts to buy expensive services or goods at annual fairs and shows," says Carolyn Lentz of the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations (MCCR). "Of course, there are also many satisfied customers out there we never hear from. Just don't stumble in- to a house-of-consumer- horrors through lack of caution." Salespeople hawking their wares are as much a part of the carnival tradi- tion as merry-go-rounds and, at many fairs today, the sales booths cover as much ground as the mid- way. Consumer shows are geared almost entirely toward promotion and sales. Consumer-oriented ex- hibits such as home, garden and hobby shows attract hundreds of thousands of people, year-round throughout Ontario. Accor- ding to Lentz, many people use these events as oppor- tunities to see a whole range of products under one roof. And that, she says, is a smart way to comparison shop. "If you go to a show with the intention of com- parison shopping and get- ting to know the products or services that are available, I'd say you're making the best use of the event. Put me in a snake pit with reptiles crawling all over me. | would probably have names for every one of the little fellows. Give me the challenge of walking a tightrope over Niagara Falls. | would most likely bring along my camera. Let me be the top person on a pyr- amid of water-skiers in shark-infested waters. Better still, let me be on the bottom to fend off the man-eating fish. Never, ever, however put me in a confined space. | am claustrophobic. If you put me in the back seat of a car, | will scream sporatically and distract the driver. | believe this minor annoyance developed when | was stuck in an elevator in Spain. | thought | was going to die. In fact, | welcomed death, or at least a dead faint. My life passed before my eyes. | saw my- self stuck in an elevator. The capacity was four people. We were five. We made it from the 6th floor to the basement in seconds. | always thought if you jumped up just before you hit bottom, there would be no injuries. | was wrong. | landed on a lady's foot. We were trapped in a tiny space so far down in the bow- els of the basement that | saw hell. | also saw the cement foundation from the narrow win- dow. It was impossible to open the door. My heart started pounding so loudly the people with me thought it was the rescue team break- ing through the cement. My 24 hour deodorant protection quit. | became a quivering mass. Then | saw the red emergency button. | cla- moured over everyone, beating my way to the front, causing bodily harm and shouting "every man for himself." It was an ugly scene. They tell me we were only trapped for min- utes. It was at least a day out of my life | will never regain. A little Spaniard heard the bell and came by, teasingly waving and yelling "manana" which apparently means "tomorrow." As my Spanish vocabulary is rather limited, | let forth with a string of English obscenities. The little Spaniard had us up. and out of there in sec- onds. To this day, | believe he knows it was probably the most important thing he ever did in his life. W.
