12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 10, 1990 "Brown Bag Week" encourages disposal of old prescription drugs 18 your medicine cabinet full? If so, chances are that some of those drugs are no longer safe to use, or are no longer needed. The week of October 15-19 has been designated Brown Bag Week. During this week, everyone is encouraged to bring their old prescription, and over- the-counter drugs to their local drugstore, where the pharma- cist will safely dispose of them. Any prescription drugs more than two years old, or any ex- pired over-the-counter drug should be destroyed. These should never be placed in with household garbage. Small uantities may be flushed the toilet, but everyone is encouraged to take them to your local Jharmadisi during the week of October 15-19. This is the first year for this rogram in Scugog, but it has been successful in other com- munities. Local pharmacists have stated that it should be done on a yearly basis. The main reason behind this project is that hospital person- nel were seeing seniors comin to the hospital with accidenta drug overdoses much too often. According to Sandy McCully, Discharge Planner, and Dia- betes Education Co-ordinator at Port Perry Hospital, there are many reasons behind these accidental overdoses. Often seniors have a multi- tude of pills, and either take the wrong pill, or the wrong combi- nation of pills, and encounter complications. Many cannot see well enough to read what the medication is for. Often they will begin a new bottle before the one they are currently taking is empty. This results in the senior only seein the recommended dosage, an will often take two pills of the same medication. If these are heart pills for example, this would cause the heart to slow down, and the consequences 4 canbe devastating. Sandy McCully(l), Discharge Planner, and Diabetes Edu- cation Co-Ordinator at Port Perry Hospital helps Connle Glass check her medication, expired. Brown Bag Week IS and dispose of those that are October 15-19, and everyone Is encouraged to take their old medications to their local phar- macist, who will dispose of them safely. Please see story for more detalls. Other seniors tend to save a : bottle, and later when the time comes to use it, they forget ee what the purpose of that medi- cationis. What Brown Bag Week is en- couraging is for seniors, and everyone else, to clean out their medicine cabinet, and take the to their local pharmacist. The pharmacist will safely dispose of expired medications, and have also offered to spend time with the seniors to explain the purpose of their other medi- cations. Community pharmacists have also offered to donate five cents to the Hospital Building Fund, for every container that is brought back to them during this week.
