When the team takes to the ice this Sunday night (Oct. 7) against the Ajax Axemen, the game will be for real. Face off Sunday at the Scu- gog Arena will be 7:30 PM as the MoJacks set course to de- fend the Central Ontario Junior C title they won last year in such dramatic fashion. After four weeks of training camp and four exhibition matches, head coach Ken Har- man told the Star he likes what he sees in this season's roster. "On paper at least, I think we are a little stronger club than last year," he said, adding the line-up is pretty well set right now. Harman said MoJack fans can expect to see plenty of of- fense from the forwards, and he's pleased with the six de- fensemen who are signed to cards. Chris Arsenault, Bob Wil- letts and Rob Metcalfe are back with the club for another sea- son. \ And they are joined by Bill Lawrenson, a versatile player who can kill penalties and take a turn up frontif needed. Phil McBride of Port Perry will see lots of duty along the line. He's got Junior B and C ex- perience, and adds some size and toughness to the club The only rookie on the blue line to date is 16-year old Steve Wyrozob, a native of Whitby. "We like his attitude, and we (coaching staff) are confi- dent we can work with him," said Harman. Up front on the forward lines, the MoJacks have eight veterans returning from last year's squad. Team captain and League MVP Brad Menzies will centre a line with John Harman on one wing and newcomer Dax Wasy- lykon the other. Wasylyk is a fine prospect from the Oshawa Kiwanis Mid- gets last season. This trio should do a lot of scoring for the MoJacks this year. Coach Harman said his sec- ond line combination will be Todd Taylor, Jim Vernon and Kevin Gibson, who saw a lot of action together last year. This trio can play the game both ways-checking 'and scor- ing-and the year of Junior C ex- perience for Vernon and Gibson should prove beneficial. The coaching staff hasn't yet decided totally on the combi- nations for the other two lines. They'll be made up from a combination of veterans and newcomers. Dan Maw is a strong two- way player; John Lally plays a rugged bruising brand of hock- ey will add muscle up front and he'll pop some goals as well, and Kevin Desrosiers, perhaps the quickest player on the squad found a scoring touch late last season and came up with some important goals. Jarrett Harman played mi- nor hockey in Port Perry last season. He's the younger broth- ge of forward John and coach n. Newcomers to the line-up' are Al Very, a 20-year old out of Oshawa who has Junior B expe- rience; Greg French, a 16-year old from Whitby, and Steve Pe- terson, an 18-year from Oshawa who played high school hockey last season. The goaltending position appears solid at this time. Dwayne Mackie is signed to a card. Coach Harman said he had a strong training camp and has recovered completely from a knee injury that kept him out of action for part of last year. And Tony Sortino, the acro- batic and highly competitive hero of last year's playoffs, showed up at practise last week and indicated he would like to join the MoJacks this season. Harman said there is a good chance Sortino will be inked to a card this week. The ModJdacks played two exhibition games last weekend, losing 6-4 in Lakefield and then 8-2 Sunday at home to the same Chiefs. : Several veterans were out of the line-up for these games as the coaching staff took a final look at several players before setting the roster. . Three young Port Perry players given a long look at camp are Steve Laird, Jason Co- chrane and Cory Bricknell, who won't be 15 until mid-October. Harman said he liked the way they performed, but the team decided to return them to the minor ranks in Port Perry, where they will get plenty of ice time. With the roster pretty well set as of Sunday night, the team , will hold two practises this week to get ready for the league opener against Ajax. "We'll be working 'five- on'fives' and some penalty kill- ing," said the coach. Work on the power play will wait for a few weeks. | Harman said the fact the team is defending league cham- pion can have positive and neg- ative affects. Every team wants to knock offthe League champs, but the players may have a little extraincentive to make it two in arow. Harman said he expects the seven team loop to be highly competitive this season. Uxbridge and Little Brit- ain appear to have strength- ened this season; Bowmanville always comes up with a strong 'club, and the Lakefield Chiefs, bhsed on the weekend games, appear to have no shortage of players who can put the puck in the net. The team will play a 36- game schedule this season, meeting the others six times. For the home opener Sun- day night, the MoJacks will be decked out in new jerseys.
