Where is it carv- ed in stone that a man and a woman will take their marriage vows and live blissfully everafter? And, even with the "how-to" books, counselling or even cohabitation before marriage, one is not guaranteed with absolute certainty this will ensure a loving union till death, in this era of high divorce rates. If there is any doubt in a couple's mind regar- ding the commitment of marriage, the true test is really quite simple. Wallpaper together. Wallpaper a room that has at least two windows. It wouldn't hurt to have a thermostat and electric baseboard heating thrown in as well. Go together to choose a nifty patterned number that almost defies matching. Don't forget to buy a border for the finishing touch. Oh, | don't mean the ready-made borders that you have to take out a bank loan to pay for. Just buy a roll of wallpaper with lines init. You can cut it after. Forget buying a tray to soak the wallpaper. Use the bathtub. Remember to buy a brush to smooth out the odd bubble that may pop up. One cannot improvise with an old kitchen rag and have the finished product look esthetically pleasing. | digress briefly, but how well | recall one cou- ple who perservered through ten long years of mar- riage before wallpapering together. By the time they had turned the first corner, they had divided all the furniture, phoned the real estate agent, cleaned out the refrigerator and booked the movers for the following day. Wisely, however, instead of sending the kiddies to summer camp, they enrolled them in the School of Wallpapering. If you have completed the entire room and can distinguish between a smile and a grimace, you are ready to cut the border. Unravel the roll and start at opposite ends of the room. Scizzors in hand, com- mence cutting, stopping every couple of minutes to blow a kiss to your beloved or, what the heck, a quick wink will do for the reassuring effect. If you have met in the middle, and if you can honestly look at those scizzors as a helpful tool and not as a lethal weapon, you just may have the basis for the beginning of a strong and everlasting relationship. Having survived "THE TEST," if there is still the slightest doubt in your minds, ask for lessons on a standard gearshift car. (Helen Suzanne is a pen name for the author who lives in Port Perry). Hiring contractor From Page 3 The Contract Once you have chosen a contractor, you'll have to sign a contract. This docu- ment should include all per- tinent information, in- cluding a detailed account of the work to be done -- in- cluding any subcontracting work, and any warranties. It should also include a list of any permits which are re- quired and an outline of who is responsible for obtaining them. (Homeowners should check with city hall before the project gets under way to make sure there will be no problem in obtaining the necessary permits, and to ascertain which permits are required). Renovation contracts should also include the overall cost of the work to be done and any payment terms, as well as the begin- ning and finishing dates of tract. Some contracting firms require a deposit; others may not. Interim payments may apply to big- ger jobs, but only after cer- tain phases of work have been done. Any amendments should be documented by both the homeowner and the con- tractor, so that all costs can be accounted for.
