28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 11, 1990 The Port Perry Canadian Tire Bantam Fastball team advanced into the league finals without a loss in pre-championship play, and therefore had to be beaten twice to be eliminated. The Championship final games were held last Wednesday at Adams Park in Scarborough against the home town team, the Scarborough Reds. In the opening game, Chad Ven- ning pitched an 8 hitter with very little support from the rest of the team. As a.result, Port lost 11-0 in only five innings since the '"'mer- cy rule' applied. In the process, he struck out 4 and walked 3. Jasen Dawson broke Scar- borough's no-hitter in the 5th for the only hit of the game. Seems the week-long layoff and power skating the night before did not allow the players to be in the game. For those of us who were at the Ontario Finals in Mitchell last year, we thought, "Oh, no! Not again!" The second game was played after a 20 minute break and not even the dense fog rolling in could keep the Port Perry players out of THIS game. Jeff Card had an excellent outing, beating Scar- borough 4-0, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 7 and walking none. According to the catcher, Scott MacLennan, all of Jeff's pit- ches were really working well in this final game. It was a 0-0 ball game until the bottom of the 4th inning. Jason Cochrane started with a lead-off walk, and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Moase and a ground-out to first by Gavin Cochrane. With two out, Scott MacLennon drove in what proved to be the winning run. In the 5th, Port put the icing on the cake by scoring 3 more runs, and they never looked back. Darrell Vander Ligt started the inning . with a double and was moved over to third when Todd Smart layed down a sacrifice bunt. Jason McBride drove in Darrell with an RBI single. Bases were loaded through a hit single by Jason Cochrane and a walk by Brad Moase, when Gavin Cochrane drove in 2 more runs with a single. The score was 4-0 after 5 innings, and the Port Perry coaching staff breathed a little easier. * Scarborough could not get anything going in the 6th or 7th in- nings, going down 1-2-3 as Port Perry's pitching and defensive play were unbeatable. Following this foggy double- header, Port Perry was the League Champion and received the Gold Medals as the York Durham Bantam Champions for 1990. The winning team was compos- ed of: Jeff Card, Gavin Cochrane, Jason Cochrane, Jasen Dawson, Grant Kay, Steve Laird, Jody Logan, Scott MacLennan, Jason McBride, Brad Moase, Ryan Picard, Todd Smart, Darrell Vander Ligt, Darrell Vander Slagt, and Chad Venning. The coaching staff: Ron Redman, Bob Vander Slagt, and Wayne " Venning. Oshawa down Gamblers to take 1-0 lead in league finals The Greenbank Gamblers went to Oshawa last Tuesday night for the first game of the Oshawa Ci- ty and District "A" Finals, and came home with a tight 1-0 loss to the Oshawa Merchants. ' This gives the Oshawa Club the lead in the best 3 out of 5 final series with the second game of the series going this Monday night in Greenbank. Madrk Goreski pitched a master- ful game on the Gambler mound and going into the bottom of the sixth inning he had allowed Oshawa only one hit. The problem was that the lone Oshawa hit was a towering home run off the elec- tronic scoreboard at Durham Fields that Gerry Delaney, the Oshawa shortstop had belted in the first inning. The first inning clout held up as Jim Chilvers held the Gamblers off the scoresheet and gave Oshawa the 1-0 victory. The Greenbank team gave the old '"'college try" as they had a baserunner in every inning, but the sixth and in the fifth inning they potentially had Oshawa on the ropes. Lawrie Williams led off the Greenbank fifth with a line drive single to left and with one out in the inning a miscue by the Oshawa shortstop put runners at first and second. Rod Real then beat out an infield hit to load the bases with still only one out. But Jim Chilvers bore down to strike out the dangerous Trevor Till and retire hard hitting. Don Beaton on a fielders choice to end the inning. Rod Real had two hits for Greenbank with singles going to Don Beaton, Brian Till and Lawrie Williams. This series should turn out to be a dandy final between these even- ly matched teams as both teams have excellent pitching staffs and good defense. However Oshawa have had the edge on the Gamblers this season with a number of one run decisions so Greenbank will have to dig a lit- tle deeper and turn the tables on the Merchants if they want to re- tain the City & District Champion- ship they captured in 1989.
