---------- ------ Group bolsters Durham's image A new community based com- mittee has been formed to pro- mote Durham Region as a. good place to work and live. \ The Durham Marketing Strategy Committee has grouped together appropriate people for liasing with government on how and what to promote about Durham Region, from the perspective of the community and private sector. '""We have developed short and long term goals which will un- doubtedly be refined as we move ahead. It is not our purpose to diminish the responsibility held by municipalities to promote themselves and the Region," says David Tonkin, committee chairperson. A recent orientation meeting was held with the eight municipal Mayors in the Region, the Region Chairman, planning staff and other invited guests. This event was planned in an affort to ex- change ideas and information respecting mutual concerns; and to unveil the committee's concept, purpose and future plans. 'The fun- ding for committee projects will have to come from member organizations," says David Tonkin. "Our group was formed after the Oshdwa & District Real Estate Board was approached by various business organizations, to assist in researching the feasibili- ty of establishing an overall marketing strategy for the Durham Region." "Durham has a lot to offer, and housing prices are 35 percent lower than those in the Toronto area. Yet we feel we are losing potential growth, which originates mainly from the Toron- to area to municipalities outside of the Region. It is felt that peo- ple need to be made more aware of our vibrant and diversified area." With news features, a possible advertising campaign and representation for the Durham Region at upcoming major trade shows, the committee intends to make every effort to enhance the image of the Region.
