Big . Brothers/Big Sisters Association of North Durham is now into the month of September; Big Brothers/Big Sisters Month. We use this month to let the communities we serve know that we are here and we provide a ser- vice to children between the ages of 6 and 17 years. We are a not-for-profit agency that believes in friendship and that friendships create futures. We provide one-on-one relation- ships to children (boys and girls) with adults who care to volunteer a few hours a week and a part of their heart to these children. The majority of the children we serve come from a single parent fami- ly - mother-led home with the distinction that LITTLE SISTERS can and do come from dual parent families. At present we serve 17 children in the communities of North Durham which include Port Perry, Uxbridge, Sunderland, Cannington and Beaverton. In May, 1989, the agency served 5 children and we now service 3.4 times that many and the number increases monthly. The service that we provide is a special one in that each person in the Match - BIG and LITTLE benefits. A BIG is an adult over the age of 18 years who can give a week- ly commitment of 3-4 hours for a minimum of one year. They volunteer their time to befriend a child who needs a friend; so- meone who will listen when they talk, someone who will unders- tand that you can't talk to your Durham College new programs Video Production, Video- Hyjinks, and Fine Art Vision and Communications are among the new courses offered in the Fall Continuous Learning Calendar of Durham College.
