However in the three day tour- nament held in Peterborough on the weekend the Greenbank squad put it all together and came home with top prize money and Labatts Jackets as they ran off seven consecutive wins including five in a row on Sunday. The Gamblers opened the tour- nament on Friday night at the East City Bowl in Peterborough and promptly put themselves behind the eight ball when they lost a 2-1 game to Fraserville in the double knock-out tournament. Greenbank out-hit Fraserville in the game by 10-5 but did not get the key run producing hits. On Saturday the Gamblers started their come back as they defeated Ennismore by a 3-0 score and then dropped Peterborough Red Oaks by a score of 4-1. Sunday morning saw Green- bank meet the strong Verona team at 8:15 a.m. and the Gamblers pulled out a 3-2 extra inning victory. Their next op- ponents were Peterborough I.C.G. where Greenbanks lead off batter, Terry Till, opened the game with a double and scored on Rod Reals single and the run stood up for a tense 1-0 win for the Gamblers. Game three on Sunday saw Greenbank and Marmora "All- Stars' again in extra innings with the Gamblers once more prevail- ing with a 2-1 win. This set the stage for the final with the previously unbeaten Bar- rie team and to win the crown. Greenbank had to defeat them twice in the double knock out format. The Gamblers proceeded to do just that as they edged past Bar- rie 2-0 in the first game and scored a 4-0 triumph in the final. The Gamblers played great ball during the tournament and their pitching was outstanding with Wayne Wells and Mark Goreski, with relief help from Lawrie Williams. Also the Gambler defense was excellent as they only committed two errors during their eight games. Trevor Till was nursing a sore ankle and was restricted to acting as the designated hitter for Greenbank and he thrived on this assignment as he rattled opposing pitching with eleven safe hits in the tourny. Brother Terry Till also had a big weekend as he col- lected ten safe base hits. In fact all the Gambler batters were con- tributing timely base hits. The most valuable player in the tournament was judged to be Greenbanks Mark Goreski and the top pitching award went to the Gamblers Wayne Wells. The Oshawa City and District League will wind up this weekend and the two top teams (Oshawa Merchants and Greenbank) will be playing a series to determine the Oshawa City & District Cham- pion for 1990. The Gamblers are still awaiting finalization of their mens Senior Triple "A" playoffs in the 0.A.S.A. and more information on this item in next weeks paper. Right now it appears that Greenbank are peaking at the right time and should give any team a real challenge for the 0.A.S.A. Triple "A" Crown. Travelling to Pickering to compete in the annual Durham Cup Tournament, this team of 7 & 8 year old soccer players came home winners of the pre- stigious Durham Cup In their division. The Port Perry Pee Wee Mo- Jack's hosted the Ontario 'C' Championship on the weekend. The team performed very well, finishing fourth, and losing only to the eventual finalists. MoJack's opened Saturday morning against Carp and com- bined timely hitting, solid defense, and a strong pitching ef- fort from Bill Zaparanuik to win 9-4. Bill went the distance, fann- ing 4 and allowing only 6 hits. Paul Linton went 3 for 3 to lead the hitters, with Dave Bourgeios contributing a key triple. Paul, Dave, Bill, and Chad Kearns each scored a pair of runs. The win earned Port the right to play would-be champs, Napanee. This was a powerful team and despite Chad's com- plete game 8-hitter, Napanee took advantage of their chances and 4 Port errors to win 9-1. Chad struck out 4 and went 2 for 4 at the plate, driving in Scott Heasman with Port's run. Scott, Paul, and Dave had the other hits as ~ Napanee's Todd Martin tossed a 5-hitter, fanning 14 MoJack's. Port then faced Campbellford, needing a win to stay in conten- tion. Again, Bill came up with a 2K, 5 hit game, and the hitters provided enought offense to over- come a few miscues as the Mo- Jack's rolled to a 15-4 victory. This game was only 6 innings due to the mercy rule. In game 4, MoJack's found themselves on the other end of the mercy rule. Harriston, who went on to lose the championship in a 3-1 squeaker to Napanee, beat Port 10-0 in 5 innings to end the local hopes. Chad went 4 innings, * giving up 5 hits. 6 MoJack errors were costly as Harriston notched 3 runs in each of the 3rd and 4th innings. Bill relieved and was touched for 5 runs on 5 hits in the last inning. Harriston's Aaron Small was a big man as he threw a no-hitter and recorded 11 of 15 outs via the strikeout. Coaches Ray Zaparanuik and Rob Kearns were extremely pleased with the team's perfor- mance against top competition in spite of the loss. Homestead Pee Wee girls soccer On August 18 & 19, Homestead Furniture Pee Wee Girls Soccer team played in the Durham Cup held at Pickering. This is a house league select tournament with teams competing from Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Port Perry. The Homestead Gals were the only team who were entered as a house league team. Game 1 at 12:00 on Saturday found them up against Ajax. This game was played in a steady shower, but the Homestead team seemed to thrive in rain. Emily Cosway finessed her way past the Ajax goalie to score and give her team a 1-0 lead. Late in the half, Kelly Phipps connected to make the score 2-0 for Homestead at half time. Early in the second half, Ajax was awarded a free kick which resulted in a goal, to cut the lead to 2-1. The forwards rallied and it was Kelly Phipps' and Sara Cosway's good play that resulted in Sara scoring and a 3-1 lead. Action con- tinued up and down the field with Ajax again being awarded a free kick which resulted in a goal and score of 3-2. Determination of the Homestead team resulted in Sara Cosway scoring her second goal to make the score 4-2. With our gals still pressing, the final whistle went and Homestead had well deserved win! Game 2 - against Whitby Selects proved to much for Homestead. Goals by Sara Cosway & Shawna Cornish kept their team in the game but the final score was 6-2 for a very strong Whitby Select team who won the tournament. - Game 3 - Pickering Selects vs Homestead. Once again Homestead worked hard against a very talented Pickering team but ended up losing 3-1.
