34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 21, 1990 Mini-Squirt Selects win D Last weekend, teams from the Scugog Youth Soccer Club travell- ed to Pickering to take part in the annual Durham Cup Tournament. This is the most important tour- nament in which Scugog par- ticipates, because it is the chance to play the other teams in Durham Region, and the competi- tion is quite intense. This year, the Mini-Squirt Selects were vic- torious in their age division - 7 and 8 year olds - and brought the Durham Cup home to Scugog with them In the first game early Satur- day morning, Scugog was up against some strong competition from the select team from Ajax. Scugog opened up with three quick goals in the first half of the game, and despite some excellent play at both ends of the field, Scugog held on to their lead and emerged as 4-1 vietors. Jason Whitworth came on very strong for the offense, scoring 2 goals, and Steven Wygart used his long strides and great speed to add to a goal of his own. Scugog's other goal was scored by Mike DeMaio on a beautiful penalty shot which was the result of a trip- ping penalty against the Ajax eam. Scugog continued their winning ways in their second game later the same day when they played against the all-girl team from Pickering. Scugog dominated in this game from the opening whis- tle, and emerged on the top side of a 9-0 score. Jason Whitworth again led his team, scoring 3 goals in the first half before he replaced goalie Joey Drebit in net, giving Joey a chance to score 2 goals of his own in the second half. Ian Garnett, Mike DiMaio, Lyle Dufoe and Steven Wygart scored the other goals for Scugog to finish out the first day of the tournament, Due to their undefeated record in the first day's action, Scugog advanced to Sunday's Champion- ship game, where they came face- to-face with a strong Whitby squadron, who had been vic- torious in their divisional battles against Uxbridge and Pickering. This would prove to be one of the toughest battles in any of the finals scheduled that day, but at the end of 48 minutes of hard- fought action, Scugog emerged on the top of a 1-0 score. The first half of the game left both teams scoreless, despite some strong plays at each end of the field. A Whitby penalty shot early in the game as the result of a controversial hand ball could have made a major difference in the outcome of the game, but goalie Joey Drebit made a great save to keep his team in the action. A number of good passes in the second half on the part of Scugog finally led to the winning goal by Jason Whitworth in the third quarter, and then it was up to the defense to take over and assure urham Cup that Whitby would not have a chance to tie up the score in the closing minutes. Conan Duda and Mike DiMaio were brilliant on defense, and kept control away from the Whitby forwards in the dying minutes. Forwards Chris Medford and Ashleigh Murphy both came close to scoring an insurance marker in the final quarter, but good goaltending from Whitby prevented their excellent shots from finding the mark. When the final whistle blew, two very emo- tional teams met in the centre of the field to shake hands, and Scugog had captured the Durham Cup. Both Whitby and Scugog team members were present with individual trophies for winning their division, and then team Cap- . tain Ian Garnett and Coach Bob Murphy were presented with the well-deserved Durham Cup. Coach Murphy has decided to let each of the players have the cup in their home for a month so that everyone could have a chance to show it off to family and friends. Select tournament play is now finished for the Scugog Squirts, but each of the players can now look forward to Cup Day this Saturday, August 25, when the Scugog House League teams will get together to draw another suc- cessful soccer season to a close. On behalf of the players on the Squirt Select teams, a big thank you to coaches Murphy and Garnett for all their work at prac- tices and tournaments this season, and thanks to the parents for all the driving and support that was offered to the players in this very successful season. Cowboys end season The Cowboys ended their year on a winning note with a win over Philp Pontiac. The final score was 14 to 12. For the Cowboys, Philip Donnelly and Jamie Irvine were hot with their bats both going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's each. Adam Davidson contributed to the team effort going 2 for 2. John Sax played well defensively put- ting out 4.
