18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 21, 1990 Still seems like some kind of dream For Mike Nixon, the last couple of months have been an intense emotional roller- coaster of the most personal na- ture. The up and down ride start- ed for Mike early in June when he learned that his natural brother was looking for him and wanted to meet him. Mike, 24, who lived in Prince Albert most of life, was adopted at the age of three. And until this summer, he said he really had no burning desire to make contact with his natural siblings or parents. But all that changed in June when he returned home from work one day to find a note on his door asking him to call a number in Toronto. He made the call a day or two later, and was both sur- prised and shocked that he was talking to a professional "people finder "who told him his brother wanted to meet him. "At first I wondered if this was some kind of a joke," Mike told the Star in an interview last week. But Audrey Douglas as- sured him it was no joke, andin- deed his older brother and sis- ter wanted to meet him. Mike initially said he want- ed a few days to think it over, and then made the decision to agree to the meeting with his siblings. That meeting took place in 'Port Perry the August 1 long weekend, and Mike said it was an emotional time for all three of them. \ But now, he has no doubts at all he made the right deci- sion. Ironically, his older broth- er, aged 30, is also named Mike. His sister, 27, Michilene. They live in the Ottawa area, and Michilene and her husband have a young son. "lI became an instant un- cle," Mike mused. The brothers Mike hit it off well together, and found they have a fair amount in common. Both enjoy all sports and both at one time coached girls. soccer teams. They are virtually the same height and weight, and even though there is six years between them, there is a strong facial resemblance. And they were surprised to find that their hand-writing is very similar. They agreed to maintain contact with each other. In fact, just this' past weekend Mike travelled to Ottawa to visit his brother and sister. Through the course of the reunion in Port Perry, Mike learned that he has two other natural siblings; a brother 25 and another 21. He said the younger one is reluctant at this time to make contact, but Mike thinks that some day in the future, all five siblings will eventually get to- You Can Vote Before Election Day! It was his older brother Mike who started this several years ago when he moved to the Ottawa area from Kapuskasing where he was raised. The elder Mike went out on his own and tracked down the siblings birth parents, then he found the sister Michilene liv- ingin Hull. To find Mike from Port Perry, he used a professional agency that specializes in this kindof service. Mike told the Star that un- til his older brother made con- tact, he had no desire to search for his natural siblings or par- ents. "Maybe it was just fear of recently re- united with his sister Michilene and brother Mike. He said it was an emotional experience, but he has no regrets. (see story) the unknown, I don't know," he said. And he was also very ap- prehensive about hurting his adopted parentsin any way. But they (Len and Carm Nixon of Prince Albert) were very supportive when he first told them his brother was try- ing to make contact. They had never hid the fact Mike is adopted, and he said they encouraged him to estab- lish contact. "I'm really grateful to them for that," he said. "If they had shown any kind of hesitation at all, I would not have agreed fo the meeting." In fact when his brother and sister spent the weekend in Allen's Siding -- REACH INDUSTRIAL PARK. --. Even now, three weeks af- ter that first meeting, Mike ad- mits he's not down yet from the emotional roller coaster. "It still seems like some kind of dream," he said. As for anyone else who might be thinking about trying to establish contact with natu- ral siblings or parents, Mike says simply, go ahead. But he has a few words of advice: proceed with caution and be prepared for disappoint- ment. And he also said it is very important to have the total sup- port of parents. "Tell your (adoptive) parents that they will always be your parents, no matter what happens. Use the services of a profes- sional "people finder" and get advice from the Childrens Aid Society. He most certainly does not recommend striking out on your own and arriving un- announced at the front door saying "Hi, I'm your brother." Mike said he's grateful for the encouragement and advice from numerous people over the last couple of months.
