20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 14, 1990 . Storm causes blackout in Epsom HH Many from our congregation at Epsom Church attended the beautiful christening service con- ducted by the Rev. David Clinker for Elizabeth Rose Waterman, beautiful daughter of Glen and Nancy, then all enjoyed coffee and cake at the manse. Our best wishes for a long and happy, healthy life for Elizabeth. Brian Wiersma and friend Jill of blythe were weekend visitors with Barb and Ross Evans. Our deepest sympathy to the Wilson family and relatives and friends of the late Miss Ruby Wilson who passed away on Sun- day. Ruby lived in Epsom area till she went to Africa as a missionary. Don and Stella took a drive up to the Parry Sound area for the weekend. Barbara and Ross Evans and Wendy attended the 25th anniver- sary for Murray and Mary-Anne Meek at Victoria Corners on Sunday. We were sorry to learn that Bob 2 301 i eden) 8 3 RR, Andrews is in Centenary Hospital in Toronto and will undergo by- pass surgery. Sunday callers at my home were my sister-in-law Charity Jeffery and her daughter Lorna Bennison of Toronto. Beth Catherwood of Oshawa is visiting her mother Ruth Ashton. James Ashton who has been visiting his cousins Brad and Paul Ashton of Oakwood for a few days returned home when his parents Keith and Faye Ashton and Grandma Ruth Ashton visited his aunt and uncle, Allan and Joyce Ashton. Sunday, August 19 - Joint an- nual congregational outdoor ser- vice at 11 a.m. at the Redwood home with pot-luck picnic lunch followed by an afternoon of swim- Hing, fishing, boating, and fun for a z Sunday's storm - 3:30 p.m. -- On the rain guage at the Keith Ashton farm, it registered 3 in- ches of rain fall in half an hour. Also the ground was white with hail-stones the size of cherries. In Epsom a mile and a half east, we had a real down-pour and one transformer went down the drain too. Three of us reported to Newmarket Office. Apparently they thought someone was play- ing a joke as no one had heard of Epsom, though we had given our lot and concession number, etc. So when one of our neighbours hailed down a hydro truck about 10 p.m. when told there were 7 families with no power they said, "Impossible, there are never more than three families on one transformer." However, our hydro power came on at 11 p.m. But it was a long dreary evening. Did you hear about the Englishman who upon retiring home was asked, "what was sum- mer like in Canada?' He answered "I really couldn't say, I was only there eleven months." What comes after a three day rain? - Youth replies "Monday." Day Care needs recipes There will not be a United Church service in Epsom or Utica this week but all are invited to at- tend the joint service, pot luck lunch and picnic outdoors at the Redwood's of Goodwood. If rain- ing, service will be conducted at the Goodwood Church. Time of the service is 11:00 a.m.. All euchre players are invited to come out to Utica Hall this Friday starting at 8 p.m. for 10 rounds of euchre, lunch and topped off with a freeze-out. Admission is $1.50 which includes a free draw. A reminder that if you didn't catch last week's column, Utica Community Day Care is compil- Versatile ing a cook book and they would like to have recipes from you. If you have a favorite recipe or two, drop it off to the Day Care or leave it in their mail box. Hillis & Carol Wilbur have returned home from a two week motor trip to the east coast. While in Moncton, N.B. they called on Carol's cousin Wayne & Mrs. Mat- tice. On the way home they stop- ped off in Ottawa to visit with Rick & Mary Young and their new baby David. Bill and I attended the Brown family picnic on Sunday at the home of his sister Bea Kelly near Reaboro. Larry & Doreen Kendall held a gathering on Sunday with supper guests being from Whitby, Port Perry, Toronto and Utica to meet with Mr. & Mrs. Bob Teskey who were visiting from Beamsville. It's nice to see Merv Storie out and about following his recent stay in Oshawa Hospital where he underwent surgery.
