Mecco Contracting vs. "Blackstock Lions cancelled due to rain. -- Please recycle this newspaper We Deliver The NEWS Read the Star weekly! \. Corner Five by John Wally Nesbitt This season's most often heard joke is "What do you get after 3 days of rain? The answer is, of course, "Monday."' And the summer of '90 lived up to its soggy reputation as the stars and cars of the CART/PPG series came to Toronto for the fifth annual Molson Indy. Rain virtually wiped out the Friday morning practice ses- sion but in the afternoon on a drying track Michael Andretti managed to dodge the puddles on the twisty Exhibition Place circuit to claim the provisional pole. Scott Goodyear, the Willowdale native making his third Molson Indy appearance, did not fare as well. Racing towards the Prince's Gate and into turn one, Scott suddenly discovered that the brake pedal had broken away from the floor of the car and as a result the MacKenzie Financial Lola buried itself into the tire wall. Fortunately, a new front wing and a new tie rod were all that was needed to repair Goodyear's racer. Mother Nature, being the tease that she is, blessed the final qualifying session on Saturday morning with glorious sunshine and after a hectic back and forth battle it was Danny Sullivan (with a little inspiration from actress Cathy Lee Crosby) who clinched the pole position just ahead of Michael and Mario An- dretti. Goodyear, the sole Canadian in the race, was suffering from a severe engine misfire and could manage no better than nineteenth fastest time. This problem granted Scott's crew a lit- tle more overtime pay as they made a late night engine change. The weather got back to what we call normal on raceday as the skies once more opened up and the rain came down when the green flag dropped. Michael Andretti immediately shot into the lead and held that position until a little bobble on lap 27 allow- ed Al Unser Jr. to slip by. The race conditions continued to deteriorate and the slick track claimed victim after victim in- cluding Bobby Rahal, Emmo Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti. Mer- cifully, the organizers realized how dangerous the situation was becoming and waved the checkered flag after 94 of the schedul- ed 103 laps giving Little Al his third victory of the season. Michael Andretti claimed second spot with series rookie Eddie Cheever rounding out the podium crowd. Perennial Toronto bridesmaid Danny Sullivan was fourth and hometown boy Goodyear drove a smart and conservative race to finish in ninth. Heading to the superspeedway in Michigan it is Al Unser Jr. leading the overall point standings by two over Michael An- dretti with oval racing specialist Rick Mears in third, another two points back. With such a close fight at mid-season, the cham- pionship will really be coming down to the crunch when the CART series makes its next Canadian stop on Labour Day for the Vancouver Molson Indy. Other Toronto winners in the weekend's supporting events include Freddy Rhemrev taking the checkered flag ahead of Claude Bourbonnais in the Formula Atlantic race, John Cadman Jr., the Cayuga racer, winning in the Players Ltd./G.M. Motorsports Series and in the most lop-sided series seen in re- cent years, West Hill's Paul Tracy captured his seventh victory in eight races aiming for the championship crown in the American Racing Series. Toronto hosts the Indy spectacle once a year but every Satur- day night Mosport Speedway rumbles with the thunder of stock car racing. The season has now reached the half way point so we'll check out the standings for our local drivers on their home track. Rod Marshall is maintaining his lead in the Street Stock divi- sion over Brian McKee with Port Perry's Fred Shepstone runn- ing a close third. Nestleton native Dave Lee is sitting in sixth position and Al Shepstone has moved up into a solid ninth overall. Rick Short from Blackstock has had his problems of late and is now running on his fourth engine but is placed in lucky thir- teenth spot. Moving up to the Late Model Sportsman class, thereis a dan- ~ dy battle shaping up for the championship between local drivers Brian Bassett, who presently leads the series, John Buchanan and Janetville's Bob Moxon. Daryl Leatherdale is still in strik- ing distance in fifth place and lan Johansen from Bla¢kstock rounds out the top ten. Another close battle is being waged in the Late Model Divi- sion. Al Thompson of Uxbridge is holding onto the series lead but is being seriously challenged by Mike Bricknell and John Greedy. Dave Taylor has his new Lumina working well and is sitting overall in eighth but is moving up in the standings. Sit- ting just behind Taylor in tenth and eleventh spots respectively are Rick Sauder and Andy Salmers with Trevor Jones in thirteenth. There is still lots of racing left at Mosport Speedway so come out and give the local boys the support that they deserve. In conclusion and on a sombre note, the North American rac- ing fraternity was saddened to learn of the death of Sprint Car and Indy star Rich Vogler as a result of a racing accident in Salem, Indiana. While leading the sprint car feature race, Vogler tangled with a backmarker in the final corner sending his car tumbling into the concrete wall. The tremendous impact ripped off Vogler's helmet and he died later in hospital from the resulting massive head injuries. The Illinois native was USAC's second winningest driver in history, trailing only the legendary A.J. Foyt. His record speaks for itself with a total of 121 national race victories and 6 national Midget and Sprint Car Titles. I was fortunate enough to meet and speak with Rich Vogler last year at Mosport International Speedway when the USAC Midget cars opened the track. Although he was having a frustrating weekend at that event, I found him to be thoughtful and gently analytical with none of the arrogance generally associated with a racing champion. He was a true winner who will be greatly missed by fellow competitors and fans alike.
