The Greenbank team knew they were in a tough situation when they drew the defending Cana- dian Champions from Owen Sound as their first round oppo- nent. And with the exception of a shaky first inning when Gambler pitcher Wayne Wells allowed the Canadian Tiremen a pair of runs the game was evenly played. However in the top of the seventh inning Owen Sound put the game out of reach when they scored two unearned runs on an untimely er- ror by the Gambler infield and the game ended with a 4-0 win for Owen Sound. The second game of the tourna- ment saw the Gamblers meet Strathroy and in this game Mark Goreski opposed Joe Adam on the pitching rubber for Strathroy and Strathroy scored the first run of the ball game in the second inn- ing with a base on balls, a sacrifice and an errant Gambler throw on a pick off attempt. In the third inning Dave Dickson evened the score at 1-1 with a long home run blast to left field. The score remained tied to the seventh inning when Joe Zantana drilled a home run to deep center field and this gave Strathroy an upset 2-1 win and eliminated the Greenbank team from the tournament. This was a major disappoint- ment for the team who had played superbly the previous week in the 1.S.C. Tournament at Owen Sound and certainly believed they would be a major factor at Waterloo. Gamblers knocked out of OASA senior tournament The Gamblers have been rated as high as seventh best in Ontario during the season and have always been ranked in the top 20 Ontario Fastball Teams during 1990. However for whatever reason they did not play with the fire and desire they showed in Owen Sound the previous weekend. ' During the past week they had defeated the newly crowned On- tario Jr. Champions from Stouff- ville on a four point game at Stouffville to inch into second place in the Oshawa City District "A" Division behind the Oshawa Merchants. Then on Thursday night they had travelled to Richmond Hill where they turned back the Star- One Team by a 5-3 score but those successes did not take the sting out of the back to back losses in Waterloo. Trevor Till was the top batsman for Greenbank at Waterloo with a pair of safeties with other hits go- ing to Don Beaton, Dave Dickson and John Tait. However, there is still a lot of fastball coming up for the Gamblers in the next six or seven weeks so they will have to put the Waterloo set back behind them and get on with the rest of their season. When the final game had been played at the Senior Elimination Tournament at Waterloo, the Owen Sound Canadian Tiremen successfully defended their cham- pionship as they downed St. Catherines Mountainview in the final.
