There are 14 students in- volved in the exchange, seven from Canada, and seven from Thailand. } The Thailand students will spend three months in Scugog as partofa cultural exchange. Mayor Howard Hall, and Durham MP Ross Stevenson welcomed the Thailand and Ca- nadian students to Scugog, and thanked the host families for their initiative in taking the students into their homes. Mr. Stevenson, and Mr. Hall then proceeded to hand out a Cana- dian flag to each of the partici- pants. The two leaders were also present at the welcoming cere- mony. Mek Chin Chai, of Thai- land, and Denise Brynes, of Canada thanked the communi- ty of Scugog for their part in the exchange. After the formal welcoming, the group and their host fami- lies gathered for a campfire, where the Thailand students - got their first taste of roasted marshmallows. The students met two weeks ago, but did not know who their partners for the exchange ro be until a week ago Sun- ay. Lorraine DuBray, of Toronto, and Jennifer Fletcher, of Van- couver stated they are both very excited about the pro- gram. Both girls agreed the experi- ence is going to be exciting, and challenging, and they are look- ing forward to it. Both stated that the most challenging part of the program will be dealing with the difference in language, and culture. "It (Canadian culture) is very different (for the Thai's) but what they are going through now, we will be going through n afew months," Lorraine add- ed. This is the second year in a row that Scugog Township has hosted the Canada World Youth exchange, last year it hosted a group from Ecuador. According to Miss Byrnes, a 28-year-old Torontonian, when a community shows great co- operation and is very receptive to the group, it is usually picked tohost the exchange again. The group of 14, will remain in g until the beginning of November, then the Canadian participants will travel to the southeast Asia country of Thai- land for three months. x. i a * PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 8, 1990 -- 27 Welcoming party held at Museum for Canada Youth exchange participants While in Scugog, each of the students will spend a consider- able amount of time with the host family working on the farm and enjoying social activi- ties. They will also attend com- munity functions with the rest of the group a couple of times a week. The host family is host to two students, one Sons Canada, and one from Thailand. The host family receives $110 a week from the Canada World Youth. While the Thai's. are from small agricultural villages, many of the Canadian's may have little or no farming experi- ence. Of the Canadian students there are two from Ontario, and Quebec, and one each from Vancouver, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia. The ideal host family would be a farming family in Black- stock, Nestleton, or the Scug Island area, but any intereste family in Scugog would be con- sidered.
