Fresh, chunky, homemade- french fries smothered in salt, and malt vinegar, have always ben a favorite with many peo- ple. Why are chipwagon chips so popular? According to Karen and Brian Burns, who own a chip truck located on Highway TA at Conway Place, chi trucks are for people who wo a quick snack, and do not want towait in a restaurant. 'The Burns' have been run- ning their chip truck since the July long weekend, and have found the work to be quite a challenge. There are a lot of long hours in running one of these trucks, Karen stated. At one time there were as many as three chip trucks locat- ed in Port Perry, but currently the Burn's wagon is the only one located directly in the town. This is one reason they decid- ed to open for business. There are other trucks in the vicinity, such as at Utica, Seagrave, fur- ther along the Causeway, and on the Oshwa Road, also open toserve the "drive-by" public. Every week business is pick- ing up, and Karen attributes this to the fact that many peo- ple are just discovering that they are there. The busiest times are lunch hours between 1la.m. and 1p.m., and Sundays. The chip truck is open Wednesdays through Sundays. When the Burns first opened their chip truck, they admitted to not knowing much about the business, but received invalu- able tips from other trucks, and from the McBrides of Galley Fish and Chips as to how to pre- pare the fries. Chip wagon chips are peeled and handchipped every morn- ing to guarantee freshness in Region considers banning cigarette machines The Durham Region health department's campaign against smoking is flaring up again, and this time officials are taking dead aim at vending machines and tobacco-selling stores.
