For the first seven months of the calendar year, combined passenger car and truck sales totalled 291,020 units. This is a decrease of 9.2 per cent from the 320,679 sold in the same period last year. Passenger car deliveries in Ju- ly of 27,248 were up 9.9 per cent from the 24,788 sold in July, 1989. Sales of General Motors passenger cars for January through July 1990 totalled 194,870, down 10.1 per cent from the 216,811 sold in the same period last year. The Chevrolet Cavalier is now the number one selling car in Canada," noted Atkinson. '"'Sales of Canada's most fuel ef- ficient cars, the Chevrolet Sprint and Pontiac Firefly, were up by more than 33 per cent over July last year," he said. 'We are look- ing for even stronger results with our recent introduction of a con- vertible model for these two en- tries. They are the least expen- sive convertibles in the marketplace today." Atkinson pointed out that com- bined sales of the midsize Chevrolet Lumina, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Buick Regal, are up 34 per cent over July, 1989. 'We have had phenomenal customer acceptance of the new, Oshawa built, Buick Regal four door sedan," commented Atkinson. '""This car has been in the market for only two months and in July accounted for 68 per cent of all the Regals sold that month." "Sales of General Motors lux- ury cars were very strong in Ju- ly as well. The introduction of the 1991 Buick Park Avenue last month put sales of this model 32 per cent ahead of July, 1989," he said. "We're really pleased with the sales results recorded by our Passport organization,"' noted Atkinson. 'Passport sold 1,091 vehicles in July. This represents the best month in their three year history." "Our trucks continue to do a great job for us. A clearance of only 10 to 15 feet saved the farm home of Mr. Bruce Geer, Utica from complete destruction when a five seater Sea-Bee plane roared across the house and crash landed in a field only 50 feet from the dwelling. The only occupant of the plane was the pilot Eric Hemmer, 47 of West Hill. He was taken to Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Scarborough Centennary Hospital. Miss Donna Strong, daughter of Ronald and Ruth Strong, graduated from Durham College as an R.N.A. Donna is now employed at Whitby Hospital. At a recent Royal Conservatory examinations in Oshawa, Robert Dobson received an Honours mark of 74 percent in Grade V piano. He also placed first in the Grade V class at the Sunderland Lions Music Festival. There are two fishing derbies scheduled for Lake Scugog in the coming months, the first, a Muskie Derby for Western Weekend, and another, the International Bass Championship for the third weekend in September. On Tuesday, July 29, 33 ladies from Summerlea Golf Course and Sunnybrae Golf Course joined together in a morning of fun and prizes.
