22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 24, 1990 Port Bantams miss by a single run Good weather but not necessarily good luck was in order for the Canadian Tire Ban- tam Fastball team at their home tournament on Saturday. The first game saw Jeff Card with a 2 hitter beat Newmarket 8-3 while recording 8 strikeouts and only 1 walk. Gavin Cochrane pitched the 7th inning in relief. Driving in the runs were Brad Moase, Jason Cochrane and Jeff Card each had 1 RBI. In the second game, Chad Ven- ning pitched 4 strong innings with relief from Scott MacLennon to combine for a 16 - 2 win over Bramalea. This was potentially a tough game, but the Bramalea bats never got a chance to get go- ing. Port bats were hot, and were loaded with 10 key hits. RBI hit- ters were Brad Moase with 4, Darrell Vander Slagt with 3, Steve Laird and Scott MacLennon with 2, Gavin Cochrane, Jason Cochrane, Jason McBride and Darrell Vander Ligt with 1 each.. This was a 6 point game, with 2 points for the tournament game and 4 points in lieu of 2 league games which had yet to be played. In the third game, Jeff Card and Gavin Cochrane combined for a 12-5 win over Dundalk. Dun- dalk put up a strong effort with 2 of their regulars missing. A greater disadvantage was that their Number 1 pitcher recorded the limit of 42 outs and had to be relieved part way through the game. Driving in the runs were Darrell Vander Slagt with 4 RBI's, Jason McBride with 3 RBI's, Gavin Cochrane, Jason Cochrane, Grant Kay, Steve Laird and Brad Moase with 1 RBI each. The win over Dundalk advanc- ed Port Perry into the finals with their league rivals, the Oshawa Shamrocks. Chad Venning pitch- ed a strong 7 innings in a 5-4 loss. In the only regular league game this week, Port Perry beat the Scarborough Diamonds 5-4 in a tight match.
