7 ET ER Re RE No zebras found in Lake Scu Officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources are keep- ing a sharp eye peeled for zebra mussels in the Kawartha Lakes this summer, and so far they haven't seen any. But MNR Kawartha Lakes Fisheries biologist Lois Deacon told the Star last week that it could be just a matter of time be- fore the dreaded zebras make their appearance in the inland waters of Ontario. The zebras are already well established in the Great Lakes and have appeared as far east as the Bay of Quinte. "There is so much boat traf- fic (from the Great Lakes) into the Trent-Severn system, that we expect the mussels to start showing up," said Ms. Deacon. Durham Region chairman Gary Herrema is quoted in a To- ronto newspaper article last Friday as saying the Toronto- Peterborough service is expect- ed to soon get the nod from pro- vincial Transport Minister Bill Wrye. Mr. Herrema is chairman of GO-Transit. He could not be reached for further comment Monday, but the article on Friday quotes him as saying "there's going to be some announcements in vari- ous directions shortly, and it's all because people need (the rail service) and want it." But a spokesman for GO Transit told the Port Perry Star on Monday morning that plans to extend GO rail service to Pe- terborough are still at the study stage by the provincial Trans- port Ministry. The article suggests the an- nouncements will be made after Premier David Peterson an- nounces the date for a fall elec- tion. It goes on to say that the service from Toronto to Peterbo- rough will consist of one train in the morning and one in the eve- ning. Liberal hopeful drops out Scugog Township council- lor Marilyn Pearce will get the Liberal nomination for Durham East by acclamation. Donna Fairey, who was also seeking the nomination, in- formed Liberal riding officials last week that she was with- drawing.
