The owner of Port Perry IGA says he may have no choice but to open his store on Sun- days. And Jim Grieve told the Star that decision may come in the next couple of weeks. "Personally, I would really like to stay closed (Sundays) but I'm just not sure I can EA that for much longer," he told the Star last week. And if the decision by Mr. Grieve is to open Sundays, it al- most certainly means that Dow- sons Valu-mart at the Port Perry Plaza will do the same. Owner Ken Dowson told the Star last week that he hates the idea of opening his store Sundays, but he will if forced to by competition. Sunday shopping in Onta- rio has been wide open for the last couple of weeks after a court ruling that the Sunday shopping laws are un- constitutional. The Government has launched another appeal, but it won't be heard until this fall. In the meantime, major food and department stores are opening for business. So far, both food stores in Port Perry have kept their COMPARE THE RATE! 165 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-8435 doors shut on Sundays, but what has Mr. Grieve worried is the fact that large stores in north Oshawa are open Sun- days. And he feels they are in di- rect competition for his shop- pers. "I have to fight back for my share of the (shopping) mar- ket," he said in an interview with the Star late last week. He said he spent a couple of hours on a recent Sunday check- ing the situation at food stores in Oshawa. . And he was surprised at two things: there were a lot of customers, and a lot of them were leaving the store with full carts; their groceries for the week. Mr. Grieve said that he's been monitoring closely his sales totals on Saturdays and Mondays in an effort to deter- mine if he's losing customers to the Sunday stores. But he added that he's al- most to the point where he is re- signed to the fact that he'll be forced to open Sundays. He thinks Sunday shop- ping for the province is here to stay, and he doesn't think fu- ture court actions are going to alter that. Both Mr. Dowson and Mr. Grieve, who operate their stores independently of head office, said they are not under pres- sure from head office to open Police say weekend incidents minimal There were a minimum number of incidents during Port Perry's Festival Days, ac- cording to Durham Police Staff Sgt. Bill Van Dolewaard. There were a few late night scuffles, but he said the week- end was quite peaceful, consid- ering the number of people in town and the many places were beer and liquor could be pur- chased. He said the cool, damp weather Saturday perhaps had something to do with keeping tempers cool. Police did lay one charge of assault causing bodily harm Friday evening after a woman was allegedly struck in the eye. And Saturday night, an ambulance had to be called to the waterfront area after an un- identified man collapsed. He had been involved in a scuffle with several others, and collapsed from an apparent asthma attack. He was released after treatment at hospital. Police said there were no charges in ~ connection with thatincident.
