Gamblers defeat Owen Sound 5-1 and 3-2 The Owen Sound Fastball Club came to Greenbank last Monday to play the Greenbank Gamblers in an international softball con- gress doubleheader at Greenbank Park. Owen Sound, who are the Defending Canadian Mens Fastball Champions apparently underestimated the Greenbank team as they arrived without their star hurler Brad Under- wood. This proved to be a costly mistake on the part of Owen Sound as the Gamblers knocked them off twice by scores of 5-1 and 3-2. In the opening game the Gamblers were paced by Lawrie Williams who tossed a nifty six hitter while the Greenbank team collected seven hits off the offer- ings of Mike Sedore on the Owen game as he singled into left field with two out and a runner on third base. Mark Goreski was outstanding for the Gamblers as he pitched both games, giving up only one run, allowing a total of five hits in the two games while striking out 17 Bracebridge batters. Brian Till and Trevor Till Col- lected the two hits for Greenbank during the game, This week sees Bradford in Greenbank Park on Jonday night for. an 8:30 game and the Gamblers head for Owen Sound for a Tuesday night double header when Owen Sound will no doubt be seeking revenge for their twin set- back last week in Greenbank. On Sunday, July 22nd, the Oshawa Merchants will be in Greenbank for a 2:00 p.m. daylight contest with the Gamblers and the following night at 8:30 in Greenbank, Toronto Sammy's will meet the Gamblers. Then on the Tuesday night the Gamblers play their third game in as many days when they meet the Oshawa Juniors at Durham Fields at 8:30 p.m.. . Then on July 27-28-29, the Greenbank team are in Owen Sound for an I.S.C. with the teams from the the Eastern (Ottawa) Division of the International Soft- ball Congress. Sound mound. The Gamblers got off on the right foot in the second inning when Don Beaton drew a walk and Dave Dickson belted a two run homer to give Greenbank an early 2-0 lead. Owen Sound scored a run in the fourth inning to nar- row the gap but the Gamblers scored again in the fourth and fifth innings and claimed a 5-1 win in game one. Larry Pilkey, Don Beaton, Brian Till, Paul Goreski, John Jeffs, Trevor Till and Dave Dickson all hit safely for Green- bank, with Bob Richardson hav- ing a pair of hits for Owen Sound. In game two of the double Header, Mark Goreski tossed a four hit game at the Owen Sound squad but the Gamblers had to come back from a 2-0 defecit to earn a hard fought 3-2 victory. Owen Sound were leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Larry Pilkey hit a double to left field and scored on Don Beatons line drive single -to centre. . Trailing 2-1 in the fifth; John Tait led off the inning with a base on balls and Carl Baylis ran for John Tait. Brian Till was safe on a fielders choice as Baylis was forced at second base. Rod Real sacrificed Till to second and then the Gamblers got the break they needed when a third strike elud- ed the Owen Sound catcher and John Jeffs was safe at first with Brian Till moving over to third. With two out Larry Pilkey plated the tieing run with a hard shot up the middle and two pit- ches later, Brian Till scored what proved to be the winning run as he stole home. Allin all it was an entertaining evening of fastball for the large crowd in Greenbank Park. On Thursday the Gamblers travelled to Bracebridge to meet the "Bucks" in another 1.S.C. dou- ble header and this time the pit- chers completely dominated for both teams. Mark Goreski continued his ex- cellent performance from Mon- day night as he and Mike Crawford of Bracebridge battled head to head in a pitching duel and the final score of game one was 0-0 which indicated the com- plete domination by Goreski and Crawford. In game two Mark Goreski again went to the Gambler mound and again pitched a strong game as he allowed only four hits and struck out ten Bracebridge bat- ters. But unfortunately for the Gamblers, Bill Michel and Mike Crawford teamed up to toss a two hitter at the Greenbank hitters and won the game by a 1-0 score when Ken Veitch plated Colin Newell with the only run of the place second The Canadian Tire Fastball Bantams had a successful week in one sense, winning five out of six games. However, it was disap- pointing as well because the team lost the championship game in the Cobourg Tournament for the se- cond year in a row. In the first game of the tourna- ment, Chad Venning pitched a 4 hitter, striking out 8 and walking 3 batters. The team defeated Amherstview in a very close game with a score of 3-1. Chad, Grant Kay and Darrell Vander- ligt drove in the runs. n the second game, Jeft Card pitched a 3 hitter, striking out three and walking one to defeat Markham 8 - 2. Driving in the runs were Jeff, Ryan Picard, Todd Smart Darrell Vanderligt, and Darrell Vander Slagt. Game three against 'Tamsworth saw Jeff, Chad, and Jason McBride combine for a win, allowing 9 hits and 5 strike-outs. The final score was 10-6. Tamsworth is a good batting club, but fortunately the bats for Port Perry were also hot. Jeff Card, Steve Laird, Jason McBride, Dar- rell Vander Slagt, and Chad Ven- ning combined efforts to drive in 10 runs. The Championship Game was against Rideau-Osgoode, and Port Perry lost the match with a score of 5-2. Even though Jeff and Chad allowed 9 hits, Port got 11 hits and left 11 runners stranded. The two runs were scored by Grant Kay and Darrell Vanderligt. This turned out to be a very emotion-filled game, and was just not meant to belong to the Port Bantams. Due to their work schedules, Gavin Cochrane, Brad Moase, and Jason Dawson were unable to join their teammates at this tournament. The two regular league games played during the week resulted in a 10-3 win for Port Perry over Newmarket, and a 23-0 route against Nobleton. The hitting statistics for the week were: Darrell Vander Slagt with 9 singles, 1 double, 1 home run, and 8 RBIs; Jason Cochrane with 7 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple and 2 RBIs: Steve Laird with 9 singles and 4 RBIs: Darrell 'Vanderligt with 7 singles, 1 triple, and 8 RBIs; Jason McBride with 5 singles, 1 double and 2 RBIs; Jeff Card with 3 singles, 1 double, 1 triple, and 6 RBIs; Grant Kay with 3 singles, 1 double, 1 triple, and 4 RBIs; Chad Venning with 3 singles, and 5 RBIs; Scott MacLennan with 3 singles, and 2 RBIs; Jody Logan with 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple, and 2 RBIs; Gavin Cochrane with 1 single, 1 home run and 3 RBIs; Ryan Picard with 2 singles and 1 RBI; Todd Smart with 1 single and 1 RBI; and Brad Moase with 1 single.
