PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE -- Wednesday, July 4, 1990 -- 13 Sires stakes 4-way split at Kawartha Downs The Labatt's Blue Ontario Sires Stakes for two year old pacing fillies highlighted the week's ac- tivities at Kawartha Downs. Thir- ty four declared starters forced a four-way split of the $40,728 event on Saturday night, June 30. Armbro Jeepers, an Armbro Omaha filly, won the fastest divi- sion in 2:02.1 for John Kopas. She was among seven starters on the card to break their maiden status. This filly raced from the four hole, but turning home, Kopas had her flying on the outside to get a half a length in front of Omabhollyanna at the wire. Frac- tions for the trip over a track listed as "GOOD" were :29.2 - 1:01 - 1:30.3. She's owned by the Wave Stable of Cheltenham which consits of sixteen newcomers to the business headed up by Arm- bro P.R. man Greg Unger. Bob Walker survived the first test on the very soggy racetrack which was dampened by an hour long downpour about 4 p.m.. Walker's filly, Spring Riviera posted the second fastest clocking -2:02.4. From post seven, Walker took is River Rouge filly to the back, but had her on the move on the outside before the halfway marker and she raced there all the way home. Spring Riviera, despite the tough trip, drew away to win by five lengths over Paint Bucket. Walker's comment was "anything I'd have to say about this filly is good. She really sur- prised me tonight." Fractions for the trip were :29.2-1:01.2-1:31.4. The filly is owned by Forbes Cat- tle Co. Ltd. - Colin and Ealine Campbell of Walkerton. Next on the speed list was Kokomo Chris. The Armbro Willard filly stopped the teletimer in 2:03.2 for breeder-owner- trainer-driver Fern Henri of Chelmsford. "I was sure I had a shot (at winning)," said a jubilant Henri after the race, "and I think she could have gone more - there seemed to be lots left."' Henri was a little concerned about the off track saying "she stopped a bit in her last start on a sloppy track at Sudbury." Henri, too, raced his filly from the back, but moved her before the half and raced three wide around the last turn before scampering home to down run- nerup Whiz Key by two lengths. The big upset of the evening was Majesty of Time, a daughter of Federated. Trainer-driver Laurie Bako got her home in 2:03.4. She returned 24.70 in her first lifetime start. Bako said later "she hasn't done anything special, but she hasn't done anything wrong, either. I didn't want to pull her in her first start, but there seemed to be lots left in the tank at the wire." _ Bako also used the come-from- behind method to post a two length victory for Marlene Stiller of London and Wilfred George of Southwold. Fractions for this one were :29.1 - 1:00.2 - 1:31.4. Cams Combo, a five year old daughter of Cam Fella captured the Fillies & Mares Preferred for Dan Clements in 1:59.1. She's returning from a rest which dates back to March 13 and looked very sharp for the partnership of Ed Friedbert - Prince Lee Acres - Norm Faulkner & Malcolm Nadler. Central Station, a four year old son of Albatross, led the way with a 1:57.4 clocking. His second start back after five months in the sick bay was a message to the com- petition that he's back. Trainer- driver Randy Waples had Central Station parked to the quarter pole in :30, but cleared to the front as the field moved past the grands- tand and got to the half in a minute flat. Central Station stop- ped off a third panel in :29.2 before a final frame in :28.2 to get his second 1990 win for Ron Waples Stable Inc. The margin was three lengths over Village Anchor.
