Mayor not thrilled with Scugog's place in GTA Scugog Mayor Howard Hall is less than thrilled at some long range planning con- cepts presented Monday morn- ing by the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) "It was pretty disappoint- ing for Durham (Region) and frankly I didn't see anything at all of benefit for Scugog Town- ship," he said at the opening of the regular Township council meeting Monday afternoon. Mayor Hall and 29 other mayors from towns and cities in the GTA were summoned to an 8:00 AM meeting in downtown Toronto Monday morning. The GTA is made up of Me- tro Toronto and the Regions of Halton, Peel, York and Dur- ham. It was created by the pro- vincial government two years ago to help co-ordinate long range planning to deal wich- what officials feel will be enor- mous demands for new public services over the next three dec- ades. It is estimated that provid- ing services for these areas over the next 30 areas could cost $80 billion. What bothered Mayor Hall, when he saw some of the maps of the area Monday morning, was that Townships like Scugog were practically ignored in terms of future growth. It appears as if the growth patterns will be to the west and north of Metro, not east, he said. It looks as if Scugog has been designated an "open space playground" for the GTA, he suggested to council on Mon- ay. Dog pound bids in over budget Officials with Uxbridge and Scugog Township are re- viewing the plans for a new ani- mal control shelter, hoping to cut costs. Two tenders for construc- tion of the new shelter were re- ceived. One was from Four Star Construction at $269,000, and the other from Steve Snider Carpentry at $233,000 But Uxbridge and Scugog councillors feel this is too much for the animal shelter. Mayor Howard Hall said Monday the project may have to be re-tendered in an effort to get the cost down. And certain changes would need to made in the specifica- tions. The proposed location of the shelter is on land owned by Scugog near the Township Works depot on Durham Road 8, west of Port Perry. Scugog and Uxbridge share animal control functions. The present shelter is located in Goodwood. Getting ready to do 'battle' A local group entitled Civil War Confederate Artillery held a practice test-firing of a canon over the week-end. Captain Jack Bainbridge, of Port Perry said he made a can- on, and carriage which will be used in an upcoming Civil War re-enactment. The group that will be work- ing under him is made up of Ca- dets from the Port Perry, Black- stock, and Oshawa areas. The group from Port Perry has joined up with a group from Pickering, under the supervi- sion of Lieutenant Raymond Huff. Together they are going to enter in the Civil War re- enactment of Corinth, Missis- sippi, 1862, to be held at the Pickering Museum Village on August 11,and 12. Lieutenant Huff said that his group hosts this event, and it is the only annual one held in Canada, the remainder are held in the United States. He added that these re- enactments are usually done in conjuction with a museum The Port Perry group cur- rently consists of 14 individu- als, but Captain Bainbridge said he would like to see it grow to 40 people, and four canons. THE REGIONAL D MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM HOLIDAY CLOSURE OF SANITARY LANDFILL SITE The CARTWRIGHT & SCUGOG TRANSFER STATIONS will be closed on Monday, July 2, 1990 for Canada Day. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, July 3, 1990. + W.A. TWELVETREES, P.ENG., . COMMISSIONER OF WORKS The Mayor said he was en- couraged by one thing outlined on the planning maps. And that was the rail line through Myr- tle. Commuters in the Scugog area are still hoping that the Myrtle line will be used once again for train service into To- ronto. The concept that was pre- sented to the 30 mayors Mon- day morning by Municipal Af- fairs Minister John Sweeney will now be studied by officials in all the communities, along with the public. Further meetings on the long range planning concepts are expected in the next few months. "| Ed Wilson.
