Sizeable increase in The number of assaults against police officers in Durham Region has increased more than 50 per- cent in a four-month period com- pared with the same time last year, police say. From January to April, there were 63 assaults on officers, ac- cording to police statistics presented to the Durham police commission Friday, up 53.7 per- cent over the 41 assaults in the same period last year. The figures relate to the number of charges laid but not to convictions recorded by the courts. Durham Police attacks Deputy Chief Trevor McCagherty said he isn't overly alarmed by the figures but said they indicate a "fairly sizeable increase." He hopes the figures "don't represent a trend that will con- tinue for the remainder of the year," he said in a telephone in- terview. 'We hope this is just an aberration." Last year, 90 assaults were recorded for the entire year in Durham, he said. The statistics also show a 42.7 percent increase in break-ins. 4-H members participate at Brooklin spring fair The Brooklin Spring Fair was held on June 1, 2, 3, 1990, at Brooklin Community Park.
