12B - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 12, 1990 The Environment ENVIRONMENT WEEK by Janet Banting Environment Week, which ran from June 3-9, is now over for another year. Thousands of events took place all across Canada, each with the intention of raising public awareness about the host of environmental problems facing our world to- day. Here in the Port Perry area, the local Lions' group listen- ed to a talk entitled "How YOU Can Make a Difference," while at the Scugog Memorial Library an interested audience learn- ed "What YOU Can Do About the Greenhouse Effect." As well, the library hosted a display with information and handouts about a variety of environmental issues. In other Ontario locations, the following activities took place: the launching of fine paper recycling programs, nature walks and birdwatching activities, bicycle tours, lectures on organic farming, tree-planting, waste audits in rural and urban com- munities, mall displays, recycling and composting displays, tours of filtration plants and dump sites, formation of new en- vironmental groups, a "Green Tea Party' with Metro Toronto councillors, workshops on how to dispose of toxics, creek and canoe route clean-ups, mall displays, community 'junk ex- changes," and a variety of activities designed to focus awareness on the problem of excess packaging. This is only a partial listing of the hundreds of activities that took place, a few organized by Environment Canada, but by far the majority by environmen- tal groups like Citizens For a Safe Environment, Pollution Pro- be, the Save the Rouge group, the Recycling Council of Ontario, and scores of other small community-based groups. Many of these events received funding from Environment Canada. I'm hoping that letting people know about all of the work done by these concerned citizens may have piqued the interest of some Scugog-area residents who may wish now that a local group had taken advantage of funding by the federal government to organize a project in this area. If you are concerned about the broad range of environmental issues, or about one particular issue, perhaps you feel that the time has come for a group to be formed in this area. There is a whole range of possible direc- tions a local group could take, depending on the concerns of the people who decide to become involved. Some might want to join in on Environmental Action Ontario's excess packaging cam- paign, while others might prefer to concentrate on raising public awareness about the 3 R's. Some people might be interested in planning activities for annual events like Recycling Week, Earth Day, and/or Environment Week. I realize that June is not a good time to start a group (early September sounds better), but giv- ing it some thought over the summer is a worthwhile idea. Let me hear from you (985-3225) if you are interested-even if you know you don't want to attend meetings, but might be willing to help out in some other way (e.g. making phone calls, doing fundraising, making posters, or whatever)! I'm going to conclude with a brief mention of this year's Recycling Week, which the Recycling Council of Ontario has set for November 19th-25th. This year's theme is-*"The Future is R's." Although it may seem a little early to be thinking about events for November, as last year's coordinator I would like to mention to local community groups a couple of possible events for this year that probably require some advance planning. These are a skate exchange and a 'Giant Garage Sale," either of which would be good activities to run during Recycling Week. My 1989 Recycling Week Kit contains a set of detailed plans for the Giant Garage Sale idea, which I would be happy to lend out to an interested group. The kit also has lots of other suggestions for Recycling Week activities. If you have any thoughts, plans or suggestions for Recycling Week 1990, please give me a call!! In the meantime, let's all remember to do our part in the war on garbage by remembering to practice the 3 R's in their proper order: 1. Reduction, 2. Reuse, 3. Recycling. It's amaz- ing how creative you can become at keeping your garbage to a minimum when you take it on as a personal challenge!
