This years specially plann- ed festivities take place from June 17th to 23rd. For a list of pro- grams see the end of this column. Our aim for Nursing Home Week is to let the public know about our involvement in the community, our appreciation to family & volunteers and to hold a fundrais- ing event to raise money for the Alzheimers Society. The residents extend an invitation to one and all to join us in any of our many planned activities. Monday, May 28th, we had a bowling match with Mr. B. Ayers winning with 108 pts. A flower ar- ranging session took place on Tuesday and was then followed by a sing-song. Wednesday, May 30th was "PARTICIPACTION DAY!!!" Everyone was delighted by the surprise visit from "Swam- py."' This helped to motivate us into keeping fit. Mr. Ray Seagar won the "Crown Life Participac- tion' Hat. A pat on the back goes to all those who took part in the challenge. Throughout the after- noon we had a Patio Party. Unfor- tunately due to cool weather we held it inside. Many took part in the variety of fun games. The fruit and dip was simply delicious. The following day we had many residents busy painting silk scarfs which are now "available at WENDY'S BOUTI- QUE. In the evening hours we had several attend the delightful play "Annie." What a terrific perfor- mance put on by a bunch of great kids. A special thank you to the Rotary Club members and stage helpers for transporting residents on the stairs. Friday then arriv- ed and with it came a Bingo match. Everyone in the home was treated to a delicious ice-cream cone. Saturday, June 2nd held a special outing with a trip to the Dome to see a Blue Jay Lg you see us with our N.H. Banner held high? A great day certainly enjoyed by those that took part. Another outing was held on the 6th when we loaded a bus and headed off to Kim's (our activity director) for an afternoon of fun and food. The BBQ lunch was simply delicious. Many enjoyed watching Kim's T.V. via satellite while others took part in a fishing quiz. Thursday we had a Bible Film shown by Carol Eagles. Fri- day, June 8th the ladies were busy baking rhubarb crisp. Grant helps in study of child care needs Allan Furlong, MPP for Durham Centre, today announc- ed a $170,000 grant to Durham College's Early Learning Centre. The one-time funding will be us- ed to undertake a study of child care needs in Durham Region. The announcement was made on behalf of Charles Beer, Ontario's Minister of Community and Social Services. _ Mr. Furlong said that the pur- pose of the study is to gather in- formation -on existing licensed child care centres and support services and to project future child care needs throughout the region. Community advisory groups will be formed to carry out the study's plans and recommenda- tions. The groups will be made up primarily of parents and child care professionals. "As well as working with cur- rent child care centres and pro- viders of support services, infor- mation also will be sought from various community sources,' said Mr. Furlong. "These include current and prospective child care users, child care organiza- tions and local governments. Results will be used to form a strategic child care plan for Durham Region."
