Gambler pitcher Wayne Wells out with leg injury With no less than six 1.S.C. (In- ternational Softball Congress) games scheduled for the Green- bank Gamblers this past week, a leg injury to pitcher Wayne Wells was something the Greenbank team could ill afford. Wells is on crutches after severely spraining his right ankle on a force play at home plate and his absence throws a tremendous pitching load on the balance of the Gambler pitching staff, namely Mark and Ken Goreski. Wells was on hand last Monday night in Greenbank park for the I.S.C. doubleheader with the Bracebridge Bucks, and pitched the second game after Mark Goreski had led Greenbank to a "come from behind" 3-2 win in the opening game. The Gamblers fell behind in this game by an early 2-0 score but got on the board late in the game when Rod Real tripled and Don Beaton singled him home. Carl Baylis ran for Beaton and scored in front of John Taits 2 run homer and the Greenbank team had a 3-2 victory. Mark Goreski allowed only 3 Bracebridge hits during the game as he bested the pitching duo of Bill Michelle and Todd Martin for Bracebridge. In the night cap Bracebridge's Mike Crawford held Greenbank to four hits and one run while his mates picked up five hits and a pair of runs to win the late game by a 2-1 score. Hitting safely for the Gamblers in this game were Rod Real with a pair of hits and John Jeffs and Wayne Wells each with one hit. So the team headed for Ottawa on the weekend to play four more 1.S.C. games with the Eastern Division and the pitching chores fell on the capable shoulders of Mark and Ken Goreski. The Gamblers got off to a poor start as they dropped a first game decision to Winchester by 5-1 and then fell to a powerful Carp team by a 12-7 score. But the Greenbank team refus- ed to quit and came back to edge the Ottawa Bernwood team by a 3-2 score that was not settled un- til the bottom of the 12th inning, with Mark Goreski going the distance. : In the final game of the weekend the Gamblers were leading the Ottawa Turpins by a score of 2-0 after three-innings, when the rains came and the game had to be called. It will be interesting to see if the Gamblers can continue to score some runs for their depleted pit- ching staff as they were doing in Ottawa. Richmond Hill is in Greenbank park this Monday night for an 8:30 game with the Gamblers and then Greenbank is at home on Sunday June 17 at 2:30 p.m. for an afternoon game and right back in Greenbank on Monday night, June 18th at 8:30 p.m.. Their opposition on Sunday will be the Oshawa Merchants, with Brad Baker, and they will meet Canadian Macabi in Monday at 8:30. The Gamblers want you in the ball park so come out for great fastball entertainment every Monday night in Greenbank park. Squirt soccer report The second week of soccer ac- tion showed a remarkable im- provement by all players. Skills matched enthusiasm in every game in the squirt league. +The first match was a high scor- ing affair with both teams displaying great offensive talents. Van Camp managed a victory over Raglan Welding, 10 to 5. Raglan was led by the play on defense by Mathew Smart, Dane Gray, and Ashleigh Murphy. The team effort of Van Camp, as well as the play of Gineen Collins, Jeff Croser, and Adam Moynes was noted. The second field had the Lions' Club and the Techstar square off, with the Lions edging out a 4 to 2 victory. Lions' Patrick Borek, Robert Sheehan, and Cory Manns played well in the offensive end, while Jordan Thompson, Chris Haertel, and the improved play of Kevin Bryars kept the defense solidly intact. Michael Gianini and Trevor Robins aided Techstar's offensive efforts while the enthusiasm and goal keeping of Wolfgang Polleske buoyed his team. ; Legion was bested by Team 2 in the third match of Tuesday's ac- tions. Philip Krohn and Dean Van Camp played well as partners, as well as Joey's goaltending and Chloe's defense, the coach noted. Wednesday had Team 7 score five goald on Snowden Rubber. Team 7 had outstanding play by all defensive players and strong shooting skill demonstrated by Cameron Vernest. Snowden's coach commented on his team's great effort against a superb offense. In the final game Johnson Con- trol came away with the win over team 9. The entire Johnson team played and passed together well. Ian Garnett, Conan Duda, and David Halward led their teams ef- forts. Team 9 had everyone play well but Derrick Roberts was ex- ceptional in net, blocking many difficult shots. All Squirt team coaches are reminded to complete game sum- mary reports so that scores and notable performances can be reported.
