---- 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 12, 1990 Ministry to update old Lindsay district map Rick Avery - A/Lands and Waters Admisistrator Lynne Burrett - Cartographer The Lindsay District of the Ministry of Natural Resources is in the process of updating and reprinting the Lindsay District map. The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce and the ministry are working together to complete this project. To assist in the revisions, a cartographic technician, edit and design technician and clerk typist have been hired under a federal employment program, "Section 25," sponsored through the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce. The map will provide visitors to the Lindsay District with an infor- mative guide to the natural resources within the area. The front of the map is comprised of a fisheries chart and a map il- lustrating provincial Crown lands, agreement forests, conser- vation authority areas and other recreational facilities. On the reverse side, text and photographs highlight the ministry's programs within the Lindsay District. The Lindsay Chamber of Com- merce has taken on the role of publisher for the District map. To offset production costs, the Chamber welcomed financial support from area businesses and agencies. Promotional adver- tisements focusing on goods and services required by outdoor recreationalists will act as a ser- vice directory for visitors and will promote area businesses. The col- lection of advertisements appears on the reverse side of the map following the ministry's text and photographs. The Lindsay District map will be an asset to anyone planning a visit to the area. The map will be available to the public in the sum- mer of 1990. Visitors may obtain their free copy at the Lindsay district office, Chambers of Com- merce, tourism offices, and local provincial parks. REVISED WORK PERMIT REQUIRED FOR WORK ON CROWN LAND The Ministry of Natural Resources is reminding the public that anyone planning to work on Crown land or private land must first obtain a work permit. In General, permits are re- quired for logging, exploring for minerals, constructing or placing any building on public land, clear- ing land and dredging or filling. People wanting to do work such as building a dock, altering their beach, or dredging or filling the water in front of a cottage should apply early for a work permit. M.N.R. district staff will assess proposals in relation to their ef- fect on local resources and en: vironment. If necessary, they will then provide advice and suggest alternatives to the proposal to 'reduce adverse effects. "Keeping the natural environ- ment healthy is important to all Ontarians,"" said Natural Resources Minister Lyn McLeod. "The permit ensures that any ac- tivity that alters Crown land -- land owned by the people of On- tario -- is done without harming that environment." Because of the possible impact on fish and wildlife habitat, we would ask that everyone check to see if the new permit applies to them. Before his appointment to the Canadian Forestry Service in 1961, Mr. Pickett worked for one year with the Ontario Department of Lands and Forestry as a Park Ranger at Darlington Provincial Park near Oshawa following his graduation from the Ontario Forest Ranger School in 1960. The Provincial Government assisted in modifying his home in such a way that he was able to conserve maximum energy for a day at work. Also, he would not have been able to go to work each day without the assistance of car pool members or travel to ac- tivities such as church, seminars, workshops and conferences without the assistance of family and friends, especially his wife who accompanies him almost everywhere he goes.
