Refinishing a wood floor is a big and messy job. Itre- quires more patience and practice than special skill. Before you proceed, make sure the--wood 'is thick enough to sand. To deter- mine, remove or pry a piece of wood from a in- conspicuous place like a closet. If the wood is 34 inch -thick, it will take another sanding. i Before sanding remove all furnishing, including curtains and anything that is moveable. Cover built-in units and doorways and set any protruding floor nails 1/8 inch below the floor's surface. Make sure you have a _ dust mask ready, and shoes with clean soles. You will also need to fill holes and gaps with a wood filler the same colour as the bare wood. Apply the filler with a large putty knife. Allow filler to dry thoroughly before you start sanding. Most rental agencies a drum sander for the main part of the floor and a floor edger for the corners and edges. Machines are heavy duty and require some strength. to operate, Make sure you get operating in- structions from the rental agency. Pay attention to procedures for cha ing sandpaper, lowering "the: drum and emptying the dust bags. You will need three grades of sandpaper - . coarse, medium and fine - in both sheets and disks. Sand with the grain most- ly, but if the floor is badly cupped or rough, sand first at an angle slightly biased to the grain and then sand with the grain. Use the rough sandpaper first, then the medium to fine grit. The main trick to sanding is not to let the sander stand in one spot while it's running or it will quickly gouge a rut in the floor. Once you've completed sanding, vacuum up the dust then check for any holes and gaps that have been uncovered.
