Agriculture minister David Ramsey ended months of ru- mour and speculation about the move when he made the an- nouncement official at a meet- ing held in Port Perry last Fri- day afternoon. The target date to open the new office is the fall of 1991, he said. : But just where the new of- fice will be located isn't known yet. The Ministry is putting out tenders for a proposal to either build or lease the new office "within eight KM of the inter- section of Highways 12and 7A." The Friday afternoon meet- ing in the Legion Hall was at- tended by about 50 Durham farmers, reps from the Agricul- ture department and local poli- ticians. Ramsey said the new single office in a central location in Durham "will provide farmers with improved facilities and better delivery of services." He added that Ministry staff "has spent a great deal of time speaking with farm lead- ers in Durham. Generally speaking they are in favour of the move." He pledged there will be no staff cut-backs when the move takes place, and John Finlay will be the ag rep for all of Dur- ham Region, effective this Sep- BIA receives support from membership The Port Perry Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) is alive and well, after its members gave the organization and its Board of Management an overwhelming'vote of confi- dence last Thursday evening. - The result of voting at the general meeting, ends weeks of 3 0% TY i 2 XE . -- fi Laat 2 A. 5h 4% Bn The "dynamic duo" of Doreen Kendall and Bill Brock i didn't let a little rain or a brisk southwind stop them Satur- : day afternoon as they completed the Nonquon course and ; raised about $3,000 for the Scugog Museum in the process. | Their canoe "Just Ducky" finally touched ground at the fin- i Ish line well into the afternoon. There are presently two of- fices in Durham to serve area farmers; one in Bowmanville and the other in Uxbridge. The Ministry will need an office of about 4500 square feet when the move is made. Moving to a single office in the Port Perry-Manchester area means that 80 per cent of the farms in Durham will be within a 40 KM radius. The announcement of the pending move was greeted warmly by Regional chairman Gary Herrema, Scugog Mayor Port Perry new location for Dept. of Agriculture offices Howard Hall and Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz. Rarnsey said there are sev- eral reasons for making the move at this time. Municipal boundaries have changed and some farm organi- zations have amalgamated be- cause of this. Also, he noted that the current offices in Bowman- ville and Uxbridge need consid- erable up-grading, especially to provide access for the handi- capped. Ramsey termed the move a "consolidation of the two offices now operatingin Durham." .
