The challenge, once victimized, is to become a survivor - to regain power over one's own life. Sexual violence exacts a price that is paid by each individual who is abused, assaulted or molested as a child or attacked as an adult. However, the price of sexual violence is also paid in ways that are only now becoming clear. As public awareness in- creases, the public price of con- tinued sexual violence is more ob- vious. Recent studies of the clients of other human service systems repeatedly indicate the _ presence of sexual violence. * Between 70 percent - 80 per- cent of adult sex offenders were sexually abused as children. * In one study, 50 percent of the adults admitted to a mental health centre had a history of sex- ual abuse. * 74 percent of alcoholic women had experienced sexual. abuse, most often rape and/or incest. * 50 percent of women in treat- g Twp. ment for substance abuse had been sexually abused as children, most often incest and rape, * 54 percent of psychiatric female inpatients had been sex- ually abused as children. * 65-75 percent of prostitutes were sexually abused as children. These and other studies con- sistently report that women with vastly different problems share the experience of sexual violence in their lives. It is not yet clear whether the sexual abuse is a direct or primary cause of later behavioral of psychological pro- blems.
