"C'mon Geese," the 28- minute video produced and di- rected by Bill Lishman has won a prRstigions Gold Apple award at the U.S. Educational Film and Video Festival in Oakland, California. And the video has been named as a finalist in the up- coming American Film and Video Festival where it will be judged May 28-June 2 in San - Francisco. Mr. Lishman, a well known sculpter and artist lives at Pur- ple Hill, just west of Blackstock. He was delighted on learn- ing that "C'mon Geese" had won a Gold Apple award. The Gold Apple plaque is the highest award given at the festival and signifies an "out- standing production." Lishman's video was en- tered in the "pursuit of leisure" category. And winning the Gold Ap- ple will certainly help to boost sales in the United States as boards of education usually pur- chase top videos from this festi- val for distribution to schools. This Festival, now in its 20th year, attracted some 1100 entries, and the competition is extremely tough. Judges not only judge the videos against other entries, but also against others from past festivals. : Gold, silver and bronze awards are given out, though judges may decide that none of the entries were worthy of a gold award for outstanding work. "C'mon Geese" has been on sale for the last several months. It documents how Mr. Lish- man attained a life-long goal to "fly with the birds." He first built an ultra-light aircraft, then raised a dozen Canada Geese and trained { them to fly in unison with the ultra-light. The video captures the ear- ly failures of the project and eventually the final success, and there is marvellous close- up footage of the majestic geese in flight taken from a camera mounted on the light aircraft. "The last thing on my mind when I started my goose flying project was to make an awa winning video. I primarily just wanted to get up there and fl with the geese, Making the vid- eo was a secondary concern, but it is a wonderful bonus to win such an award," he said. Official opening of S.A.
