32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 8, 1990 Militury band HANI i: ; LON : igi : RRS 7 3 dik BJ / d u i 3. " 4 ed The school kids were delighted when this band member "broke rank" to take the post horn right in among the audience, and place his cap on the head of one student, who isn't quite sure what to make of it, judging from the expression on her face. The Band putcn a marvellous show of military and popular music. The trip to Fort Perry was arranged by PPHS music director Barry Hodgins who is director of ernor General Guards, the "sis- ter regiment" of the Dragoon Guards. SWI SC to hold meeting The Solid Waste Interim Steer- ing Committee (SWISC) is For all your outdoor needs ... Landshapers ... landscape design and construction service It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the senior stu- dents (grades 7-8) at RH Cor- nish Public School. For nearly an hour last Thursday afternoon, the school gymnasium was filled with the sounds of music from the Regi- mental Band of 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards. The 21 member band under the direction of bandmaster W.0. 1 Gez Cross, is on a tour of Ontario, and part of the itiner- ary has been to perform for stu- dents at several schools Toronto and area. Dressed in black tunics and trousers with a wide gold stripe down each leg, the band mem- bers were an impressive sight as they marched into the gym with all the military precision one would expect of a regiment whose roots date back to 1685. But even more impressive was the music. They filled the gym with the sound of several fast and slow marches. And then towards the end of the program, the band abruptly "changed gears," to lighten things up considerably with some familiar and popular " numbers. The young students were delighted when several band members "broke formation" to take their post horns and trom- - bones in among the audience. The band is in the middle of a four week visit to Ontario, and the main reason for their trip abroad is to perform at the Gov- ernor-General's dinner to be held this week at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The GG Horse Guards is a performs at public school "sister regiment" to the Queen's Dragoons. And the band has played at a Military Tattoo and at the opening of a police building in Toronto. W.O. 1 Cross said that im- mediately on their return to England after the GG Dinner, the band members will barely have time to catch their breath before taking part in the annual Cavalry Memorial Parade in London in front of members of the Royal Family including the Queen Mother, who is Colonel- in-Chief of this regiment. So how is that one of the fin- est military bands anywhere, one that performs in front of Royalty, came to play for stu- dents at a public school in Port Perry? The arrangements were made by Barry Hodgins, direc- tor of music at Port Perry High School. Mr. Hodgins is also director of music for the Governor- General Horse Guards, and through his efforts the band came to Port Perry to play at the publicschool and at PPHS. The Dragoon Guards is a regular army regiment per- mantly based in Wales. But for the last couple of years, it has been stationed in West Germa- ny as part of the NATO force. . The regiment was officially formed - in 1959 through the amalgamation of two regiments - which got theirstartin 1685. ; .
