Organizers of the 21st Annual Canoe the Nonquon Race are pleased to announce that their NEW event for 1990, the Nonquon Triathlon, is filling fast. Registra- tion is limited to the first 100 par- ticipants and interest is running high as to who will be Scugog Township's first "Ironperson." The Triathlon is a 3-event race which consists of a 4 km. canoe in Lake Scugog, a 10 km. cycle around Port Perry and a 4 km. run beginning and ending at the Latcham Centre. The race is uni- que in that in most Triathlons the participants are competing against the other athletes and the clock but in the Nonquon event you must also rely on your partner. The overall winner of the event and trophy will be the pair (any age, any category) who collec- tively rack up the best time for the three events. Individual awards will also be presented for the best times in 3 categories namely under 20, 21-39, and over 40 (Masters). The minimum age for entry in the event unless ac- companied by a parent or legal guardian is 16. Helmets or protec- tive head gear are strongly recommended for the cycling event. The course is challenging and those competing should be train- ing now. The event promises to be exciting and the emphasis will be on fitness and fun as some of the top athletes from the Scugog area vie for the title. The winner will be our local Historical Society and Museum as they receive all pro- ceeds from this event and also the Canoe race. Special thanks are extended to Jim Wills and the Port Perry Cycling Club who have helped co-ordinate the event and will act as course marshalls. If you are interested in entering the event, there-are spaces still available. The registration fee for the Triathlon is $15.00 which in- cludes a specially designed T- shirt. The committee would like to assure all participants that canoes and cycles will be ade- quately protected while you are completing the run segment of the event. The Pre-Race meeting will take place at noon at the lakefront and the event will begin prompt- ly at 12:30 p.m. The course will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete and the public may wish to view the start and the finish at the Latcham Centre. We would also like to advise everyone that there will be very limited access to Queen St. from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. and absolutely NO PARK- ING in the area between the Lat- cham Centre and Water St. from NOON to 3 p.m. Trophies for both the Triathlon and the Canoe the Nonquon race will be presented at 3 p.m. at the Latcham Centre.
